I have always fished for redfish and trout with a spinning reel, but it seems a lot of people are using bait casters these days. What is a good all-around bait caster for saltwater fishing?

Of the three I have, I'd rank them:
1. Shimano tranx 150
2. Diawa coastal tw 80 (close second)
3. Diawa tatula sv tw 103
I've had the tranx the longest, fish it the most, and is in the best condition of the 3.

What type of fishing do you plan on doing with it? IMO, bait casters are best when accuracy is necessary. You can make an argument that spinning is good for everything else.

I love my Diawa Coastals. On my second set. First set was good to me for 7 years and I only ever rinsed them with the hose. My son is throwing them now with no issues. I have the new ones and they throw everything beautifully.

Highly recommend.

I've had the best luck with the Shimano SLX DC. They've outlasted all "Saltwater" models

I’ve been fishing shimano curados and citicas for a long time. I have 1 citica and 1 curado that are both over 20yrs old. I just bring them in every so often to get cleaned.

95% of the fishing is inshore for reds and trout.

Mostly fish a Daiwa Coastal 150 SVTW. Great for all around. Also have a new Shimano Curado that does fit better in my hand and really like it.

If I only owned one bait caster and wanted it for all around fishing I’d go Daiwa Coastal.

1. I've used plenty of quality reels not specifically designed for salt water. If your conditions allow a daily rinse anything from Daiwa or Shimano will work.

2. One of my favorite reels is the Daiwa Coastal SV TW regardless of the salt water part. It's a really good value, but get the old blue one if you can. I think they dropped the number of bearings and increased the price on the newer one with the charcoal or black body.

They're not magic or anything, but they will throw further and easier than a 20 year old Calcutta. I have both.

Shimano tranx 150

I have one that's ~3 years old and bought another last year to put on a rod I won.

Tranx is reasonably priced as well compared to a lot of others.

I love my Lew's Team Lite's and Tournament Pro's. I have 2 of each and they've held up really well in the salt with just a light rinse after each use and annual servicing. I think the Team Lite's were replaced with the Tournament Lite.

I also use a Fishing 13 Concept TX2 and Concept C2 that so far have been great reels. The first generation C's had some issues with paint/finish bubbling up but i haven't had that with the C2, but have only used it in salt about 10 times. The TX2 has been solid. I believe they were bought out by Rapala. I think there are some really good deals out there because of this, but not sure how the customer service will be in the future.

The Team Lite's are my absolute favorites of them all.

Good luck.

Best trout fisherman I know and arguably the best on the Texas coast uses all Lew's reels.

I've never been able to do it. I've been loyal to Shimano and I've always been happy and they look great.
