re: Best Whitetail States For Non-Residents

another vote for oklahoma. other than the out of state total now at $700 for licenses its a great state for deer. i'm on a lease in the south central part of the state and have a healthy deer population on our lease along with turkeys and hogs.

I used the Academy Magellans for both of my kids. I don't think they are near the quality of the Walls, but are still decent quality. They won't hold up near as good as the Walls if you're tearing through bushes/briars, etc., but were perfect for keeping them warm, layering underneath. Both Coveralls and Bibs.
re: Favorite skinning knife
Posted by SWHouston Tiger on 11/3/25 at 10:20 am to Theduckhunter
My personal preference has always been a fixed blade drop point hunter or something similar. Definitely not saying they are better than others, just my preference. I use all of the knives below in my rotation. I typically just use one knife per deer even if some of the knives will hold a good enough edge to process a second or third deer.
I'm a big fan of the Fallkniven knives. They are solid knives with a thick blade that hold a really sharp edge. This is one of my favorite knives.
Fallkniven R2 Fixed Blade Knife Black Polymer (3.2" Satin)
MSRP: $237.95
Our Price: $169.95

This has been a great knife. i use the gutting part of the blade the most.
Outdoor Edge SwingBlaze Drop-Point Skinner/Gutting Knife (3.6" Satin) SZ-20N
Online Only
MSRP: $74.95
Our Price: $64.99

Another great knife for the price
A. G. Russell Professional Hunter $75ish
Probably my favorites of all of my knives. I have several of these and love them all. Not sure i'd say they're any better than cheaper knives for skinning though, but they are great knives.
Bob Dozier Drop Point Hunter and other styles - probably north of $200, but you can find the ocassional one on sale. These are awesome. A bit harder to sharpen because of the steel (D2), but hold the edge longer than most of my other knives.

This is another great knife for the price. It doesn't hold an edge as long as some of the others, but definitely long enough to get through a deer or hog.
RUIKE Hornet Fixed Blade Knife Orange G-10 (3.25" Stonewash) F815

Fallkniven F1 VGWolf Steel Fixed Blade Knife Black Polymer (8.5" Satin)

I'm also a big fan of the Buck 110 as others have mentioned.

Primos Trigger Stick Gen3 Short Tripod
I've been very happy with my Primos Trigger sticks. I have the short and the tall tripods. I use the short 90% of the time because its much easier to use in a ground blind or box stand. I have the death grips mounted to both of them. You can get set up to shoot using the trigger very quickly.

I love my Lew's Team Lite's and Tournament Pro's. I have 2 of each and they've held up really well in the salt with just a light rinse after each use and annual servicing. I think the Team Lite's were replaced with the Tournament Lite.
I also use a Fishing 13 Concept TX2 and Concept C2 that so far have been great reels. The first generation C's had some issues with paint/finish bubbling up but i haven't had that with the C2, but have only used it in salt about 10 times. The TX2 has been solid. I believe they were bought out by Rapala. I think there are some really good deals out there because of this, but not sure how the customer service will be in the future.
The Team Lite's are my absolute favorites of them all.
Good luck.

For a budget scope, I suggest a Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 Dead-Hold BDC Riflescope. I've got this scope on a marlin 45-70 and it's held zero with no issues. The glass isn't as good as the Leupold Freedom, but i'm able to see my target good enough in low light situations (legal shooting hours).

re: Good seed hopper for atv
Posted by SWHouston Tiger on 3/28/25 at 1:48 pm to CoyillonTiger
I have one of the MOULTRIE spreaders and it works fine. the quality isn't the greatest, but for the price you can't beat it. If you are using it for smaller food plots it serves its purpose. I used to use it on a 12 acre food plot and had to stop to fill it up quite often compared to a larger one, but it did the job. The metal control gate part doesn't always form a perfect seal (part of the quality issues), so if you are wanting to spread small seeds like turnips, etc., some will spill out before you open it, and you'll only need to barely open it when you spread. if you have them in the hopper before getting to the food plot some will spill out, but not a material amount. If you use it for fertilizer the metal parts will rust. especially the bracket that mounts to the atv. make sure to spray something to coat the metal before and after like wd40 and rinse/clean. mine is about 15+ years old and still running strong except for the rust. Had to replace brackets.

I’ve purchased from them several times as well. They have a storefront in Dallas that you can pick up from directly if you live in that area.

re: When is DOGE going to investigate the USDA and farmers?
Posted by SWHouston Tiger on 2/21/25 at 11:00 am to RogerTheShrubber
One of the things they need to investigate is the minority lending under the Farmer's Home Administration (USDA). If you're not familiar, it's an agency that provides lending to "qualified" farmers. Historically, if the loans weren't paid back, FHA would foreclose on the farm and its assets to recover the funds. Under the Clinton administration, minority farmers started to claim racism if they weren't approved for a loan. Even though in most cases, the criteria for loan qualification was very clear, the higher ups in the USDA gave direction to grant loans regardless of qualifications for minority applicants. For those that failed to pay the loans back they were ordered not to foreclose. The knowledge of this process spread fast and was abused then and I believe is still being abused to this day to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
re: Dead Air Primal vs everybody else?
Posted by SWHouston Tiger on 1/17/25 at 1:46 pm to bbvdd
The smaller cap on my hybrid makes about a 3-4db difference when shooting a 308. It is noticeable to my ear, but not by much. you have to be paying attention to hear it. if someone was a few yards away not watching they probably wouldn't notice a difference. most of the time i just use the 46 end cap that comes with it. I got my smaller (30cal)end cap on a clearance sale. I definitely wouldn't pay full price for one.
re: Dead Air Primal vs everybody else?

I have one of the original model of the Silencerco Hybrid. Can't remember if that was technically a Hybrid 46. Anyhow, i've been extremely happy with it and would definitely recommend it. I use it on my Marlin 45-70 and also on my 300BO and 308. With a 30. cal end cap, i don't find it much louder (if at all) than my Silencerco Omega on those 30 cal rounds. I really don't think you can go wrong with the Silencerco, Dead Air, or the Griffin.

Another recommendation for Tactacam.
We used to use Cuddebacks at our lease. Really liked them and believe their system of linking all cams to one cam to send out pics is the best budget friendly package that i've found. The only bad part was the delay between something triggering the cam and the pics being sent. Could be immediate, but most of the time 1-3 hours. Pics were clear/good quality. Detection rate slowed a little, but not bad of the 4 or 5 years we used them.
We changed to Tactacams this year and they are awesome in my opinion. Great quality pics and almost instant trigger to sending the pics. The benefit to us with the instant pics is when we are at the lease and hogs come to a feeder or bait spot. it allows us time to grab a rifle and stalk up to that spot to take them out.
Good luck

I've been happy with my Luminox and they make some with a blue face.
I have a Tag that I could never get to fit right. A heavy watch and it was either too loose or tight after getting it adjusted.

re: Need advice on a safe and reliable 2 Man Ladder Stand with a wrap around cover
Posted by SWHouston Tiger on 8/13/24 at 11:19 am to way_south
We've been using a pop-up blind on a Quad Pod base with the chair removed and it's worked great. you have to put something solid like plywood on the floor of it or a heavy wind will ruin it. and you have to tie the side grounds to something further out to the side like a tree, bush, etc. If you tie them strait down to the frame or ground the wind will blow the side in and can cause damage. Just make sure the blind's footprint is the same size or a little smaller than the base.
That's with the rail removed too. not sure if a popup would fit with it on. the one we used was damaged so we just removed rail and seats.

re: Looking to buy the Sig Sauer P320 XTEN Carry COMP
Posted by SWHouston Tiger on 8/7/24 at 3:34 pm to jrobic4
I love the looks of the regular XTEN and this pistol too. However, I've been holding off on buying due to all of the failure to feed/eject issues with them. Not sure if those issues have been corrected. I think most of the issues are with heavier grain bullets 220gr. to 240gr. But most people buy a 10mm to use those heavier bullets. Does anyone know if these issues have been fixed?

2nd vote for this knife. Its a really solid knife and very smooth opening as well. The only negatives for me is it is a little heavy and the handle is a little on the slick side. The weight isnt that bad, but my main edc is the carbon handled bugout, which is super light. so everything in comparison is heavy. This was my edc knife prior to getting the bugout.
