There was a black couple at my church growing up; the husband did all church maintenance and his wife cooked.

Kindest most amazing people you could have ever met. My mom was a church rat meaning she looked for any excuse to be at the church so often I had to go with her and spent HOURS in the kitchen with Bea helping her peel potatoes or just sitting there listening to her talk.

Ed, her husband would sometimes stop by on his rounds and we'd sit and talk . He was Morgan Freeman before Morgan Freeman was a thing.

They taught me so much about life from a perspective entirely outside of anything my parents could provide and I loved them as much as someone can love outside of their family.

Because my aunt is Mexican and I grew up with Ed and Bea from an infant, there was no point where it occurred to me they were different than anyone else; I noticed the skin color but then again we had a scary person who had a stroke in our church and half his face didn't move and there were people in wheelchairs too.
