Pickens County, a predominantly black school, canceled its game with long-time rival Gordo, a predominantly white school, due to this post by the Gordo cheer team:

The cheer team encourages students to dress up for every home game with a different theme.

If Pickens County is this offended over a kids’ dress up theme, I’m surprised they haven’t staged a walkout over the name “Pickens” County.

I’m guessing it’s the bananas that did it. Pretty mild to cancel the whole game over.

Sounds like a 1A team that happens to be black and is 2-3 (with one of those wins a forfeit) doesn't want to lose to a 3A school that is 5-0 and predominantly white.

I'm guessing this game will go down as a forfeit for Pickens County though.

I don't get the racial component.

Pickens is right next to Tuscaloosa.

It would seem the best thing to do would be play Gordo and beat the piss out of them. But Pickens is 2-3 and Gordo is 5-0 so by canceling you avoid the loss.

Soft

But a lot of monkey and bananas for a "safari"

I would expect more lions, zebras, etc for safari

They’re calling the predominantly black school monkeys. It’s extremely racist and it’s hard to imagine someone thought this was a good idea. I get doing it if they’re the lions but the tornadoes? It makes no sense other than “yeah, they’re calling them monkeys.”

maybe those guys in the back were.

Look i went to a high school that did this for games. You either get a mascot theme OR an alliteration. its like 50/50. Tame the Tornados is pretty on par for a corny HS girl (who pick this shite) and for a mascot with no common way to "defeat". The Safari theme in and of itself isnt problematic in any way.

Bananas and monkeys when you’re the mostly white rural school playing the mostly black inter county rival is a recipe for being called out. It’s tone deaf and dumb on Gordo’s part, even if many on here will defend it.

The Pickens head coach really didn't think this through. Use the supposed implied racism of that pic to motivate their team to go out and kick arse and get a win as opposed to cancelling the game and looking weak by taking that way out.

It's soft, but the prominent monkey/banana theme makes you question the intent. You would expect a greater mix of animals and safari guides costumes. I wouldn't cancel, but the other administration should have contacted the school and those kids should have been questioned with possible punishment if ill intent was found. If it was, then a formal apology from the school would be expected.

When they finally do play there will be numerous cheap shots by Pickens and the moderates on here will justify it.

This is stupid by both sides.

The important question is wtf do roller skates have to do with that theme?
