Not everything - but a bunch of white kids thinking monkeys and bananas is the appropriate theme in this situation - yeah, it’s easy to see it as being racist. I say that as someone who hates cancel culture.

It was an image that one person sourced from the internet and posted on the cheer Facebook page as an example of what to wear on Friday. It wasn’t students from the school in the picture.

The image was sourced from Camp Luther, which is a summer camp based out of Wisconsin.

Yeah if I’m Gordo I’m recording this as a win by hurt feelings.

some of you guys are giving these kids way more credit for thinking that far into it - not every single thing is intentionally malicious.

That makes it better? The blame falls on the cheer coach for allowing it to get that far. There are thousands of pictures to pick and she went with that one. Yikes,

It’s my understanding that the people in the picture aren’t even students of the school, it was just a picture posted by the cheer team to essentially promote the dress up day, and I suppose give an example of what to wear.

I understand the apprehension people have on this one, but if the above is true (along with how commonplace the banana costume has become) this really feels like an unfortunate misunderstanding.

If anything, I would think your average teenage white kid these days is scared to death of being perceived as racist and would be even less likely to intentionally do something like this.

Their KISS costumes were spot on.

Yes, because you keep spouting off about the students doing something racist when the people in the picture weren’t even students.

Using that picture to promote pep rally is still racially motivated. It’s crazy to think something so obvious 20 years ago is now no big deal. Something weird has happened - can’t quite put my finger on it though. It’s like people with hate filled intent now have someone leading them to say “frick it, do it anyway.”

right, i understand you think so. you've only said it about 15 times already. People looking to be offended will find offense in anything, like Serena being offended by plant in a hallway. Just another day...

I actually think that this is hilarious, and we have one white knighting for no logical reason. I can find something racist in anything. I mean, the dancing banana, is that racist?

No one at fault. Nothing to see here. Bananas and monkeys when referring to a mostly black rival is ok.

You are correct though, I don’t blame the students. I blame the cheer coach that you’re defending for using a poor taste picture. She should’ve been the adult here and you should want her to be held accountable. Instead you’re defending her because it’s what your political beliefs tell you to do.

Trump and the republican party would be better off if they called the obvious out instead of insisting to turn a blind eye to it.

It’s time for people like you to grow up and move on. I’m sick of this fake racism outcry over feelings possibly getting hurt from something unintentional.

If you are looking that hard for racism that’s a you issue. It’s never going away. That doesn’t mean it’s always there.

But even worse, you are making this something because your political beliefs and leaders tell you it has to be made an issue.

I voted for orange man. I’m conservative but it doesn’t mean I’m going to pretend this isn’t intentional. Again the adults are acting like the children and doing something and then pretending like they have no idea what they did wrong.

I’ll leave at this - I’ve been to Gordo many times - mostly for football. It’s as rural as it gets. The person responsible 100% knew what this implied and did it anyways. The game shouldn’t have been canceled but the backlash is legit. I know this community and it was no doubt intentional. I’ve got nothing else to add. Don’t defend dumb, it’s not a good look.

Do you think the theme in general is racist, or just the image that was used? If it’s just the image, I want you to put yourself in the racist person’s shoes who posted that picture. How do you think they searched and came upon the “racist” image that they posted? What were their search terms? How many safari dress up images do you think they searched through before they came upon one that was sufficiently racist that they could use?
