Gonna be in NOLA next month for work, staying at the Marriott on Canal. Any place around there to have a good steak?

Charlie's steakhouse has always been solid.

With this criteria in mind, I'd say Dickie Brennan's or Doris Metropolitan.

DB's is more classic steakhouse style with a bit of New Orleans influence.

DM is less of both, but a bit more upscale on price and quality.

You have the whole French Quarter at your doorstep.
Dickie Brennan’s is right around the corner.
And of course there is Doris Metropolitan.

I would go to Galatoire’s and get a steak and soufflé potatoes with bernaise sauce.

Mr John's has not been good the last couple times. Not sure what the deal is.

Doris for modern steakhouse, Charlie's for old school.

As opposed to where? A good steak with proper kitchen is not hard.

Doris if you head towards Esplanade. Chophouse if you head towards the CBD. If you stay on Canal I'd try Brasa which is a South American steakhouse. Doris is a modern take on a steakhouse. While Chophouse is an old school version. I love Chophouse for the char they put on the bone in ribeye. And they make a damn good old fashioned.

If we are talking about the same place, run by a bunch of old-world Italians (uptown?).

I went when I was very young, probably my first steak in the early to mid-80's.

There was a downstairs and an upstairs. It was all dingy and the brothers would all yell at each other, in Italian.

Downstairs was a small dining area, maybe a deli case below the register and the kitchen behind it. Upstairs had all kinds of memorabilia and a little area with toys (that's what I remember at about 5 years old).

I don't even know if they had a menu back then. There were several cuts of steak, served on those sizzling metal plates, on top of a slab of wood. They may have had two salad choices, au gratin or baked potato for starch and not much else. But it was fantastic.

My mom would hold her napkin up, so the grease from the plate didn't get on her when they served it. My Dad once ordered a petit filet, and the waiter refused, saying it wouldn't be enough food for him.

I remember Dad saying they closed after Katrina, but re-opened.

Sorry for the trip down memory lane. Mom died this year, and I have some very early memories tied to her & Charlie's steakhouse.

It is. Ownership has changed hands a couple times. Currently Aaron Bargau of Patois has ownership.

Still no menu, but you do get to chose your steak these days.

Sitting at the bar downstairs is a great vibe. Above average bourbon selection and wine list is more than sufficient.
