LSU Film Study: Why run game is struggling!

There's a lot here.

We had a 7 on 7in the box and we double teamed 2 DL. TFl for the two unblocked defenders.

Josh Thompson looked bad. really bad.

RBs missed holes. I think they just don't trust what they are seeing. Berry missed a PB but Nuss gets the ball out fast.

It's like the OL doesn't know what to do after the initial contact of a block. Like they think they other guy isn't allowed to move.

I always enjoy whoever it is breaking down the games afterwards. Gives me something to watch while "working"

Nuss predetermining throws hurt too. The second play of the breakdown had guys past the sticks open yet Nuss incorrectly went to Durham who gets tackled short of the first down.

My biggest takeaway was that our OL looks hesitant at times in terms of their run blocking responsibilities and that Caleb Banks is really really really good. Not sure if we have a better DT left on our schedule.

Caskey’s clicker? I loved that segment. I think he has an account here.

I was in the stadium and definitely saw 3 plays that he wrecked. And I don't mean that in a positive way. On one play he never blocked anybody and looked completely lost. The defender blew right by him and hammered Durham.

I know you don't want to get guys hurt, but most of the practice videos I saw were just soft walk through or very limited contact drills.

That has its place, but you need more physical drills to prepare for in game action than we are getting IMO.

FILM REVIEW: What's Up With The LSU Offense?

I love watching Carter the Power. This guy (link above) Louisiana BKM also reviews the games with the endzone view.

Cliff notes: The offensive line is what everyone feared going into the season…..not good.

That is likely the RPO plays. OL is hung out to dry on these if it is a run play.

Not sure if that was the 1st drive where Durham dropped it on 3rd and 5 but that play upset me the most out of all of them in regards to Nuss. It’s 3rd and 5 and you throw a rocket on an out route as soon as the ball is snapped to a RB that’s in good coverage. It hit him in the chest but he still would have been tackled short, plus that’s asking a lot out of your RB to make that catch, that’s just a terrible read to me

LSU OL almost always line up set in a pass protection stance and if a play is Run Pass Option the OL has to honor the pass by not firing upfield and at the snap receives the DL in their face which is poor leverage for run blocking. The run or pass is often determined off post snap reads or late in the count pre snap reads.

What I dont understand is how other teams do this successfully and we dont. That is where it gets over my head…

The issues they are having is trying to help too much. I think they're going to encourage getting to the second level and not worrying about helping out so much which will make it easier for the running back to read the blocks when they've declared who they're blocking. They have had some really muddy holes lately.

This isn't how this works. The OL runs the RPO like a run is called. It's on the QB to get it out quick to avoid the illegal man down field.
