Was recently gifted a Rem/Marlin 336y 30-30. It is topped with a super cheap scope that probably isn't suitable for even a pellet gun. My just remove the scope and keep it w/open sights. Toying with the idea of getting a something like a 2-7 for it, though. Looking for something on the smaller/ lighter side.

Leupold VX-Freedom 2x7-33 seems like a good option at $300, but looking for other comparable options with a lower price point.

I really can't see myself using it all that much and wouldn't take it hunting where shots would be more than 100 yards.

It is. 2-7 is an excellent mag range for a hunting rifle and my favorite for a .30-30

I have a Burris Droptine 3x9x40 on my '92 30-30. ~$125. It's a great scope for the price.

Exact scope I have on one of my 30-30. It’s really a handy lil package and handles the majority of my hunting.
I have mine in detachable rings so I can pull it off and return to zero has always been dead on it’s a beer can at 100yd gun all day every day.

Nikon PROSTAFF Rifle Scope 2-7x 32mm

I have the exact same Marlin 30-30 and put on this Nikon ProStaff 2x7-32. Sighted it in years ago and it's still spot on. Best $150 I've spent on a scope. I feel very confident with it from 150 yards in. If you think you'll be shooting further than 150, I'd go up to the 3-9x 40, but keep in mind you'll have a more considerable bullet drop beyond 150 depending on grain.

Size and ADS should also be considered if you are doing any stalking or hog hunting. That is why I chose the 32 over 40

exactly what I would buy for that gun...maybe a little more objective for lower light hunting at dusk

Depending on budget you can pick lots of great options.

I just had a scope mounted on my
1981 Marlin 30-30 last week.

I choose a $190 illuminated recticle Vortex. After I have some level of success with it, I’ll retire it.

The eye relief is perfect.

Best of luck to you!

I’ve had a bushnell banner 1-4x on one for 15 years and it never lost zero. It was a lpvo’s before they were a thing.

I have several lever guns (30-30 Win, 44mag, .22 mag and 22LR) i just have iron sights on all of them. You can't beat the feel of shooting a lever with iron sights. I hunt with the 30-30 and the 44 mag, i feel comfortable shooting deer with both around 100-150 yards. I have high powered rifles depending on what stand i'm hunting out of but that feeling of smoking a doe at 75 yards with the old 30-30, you can't beat it.

Years back while hunting the wet side of Ms river levee with a group that ran dog, I put a Weaver 1 1/2 x 4 with a post and cross hair rectical on mu BLR. It was great for acquiring one's target quickly. Love it.

A scope ruins the appearance of a lever gun IMHO. And, the elk horn sights are perfect for accuracy out to 150 yards, 100 for sure. I love my Marlin 336.

Hunted with my son’s 336y a few years ago on a whim…had it set up for him with whatever cheap scope that came with it.

The scope didn’t have much eye relief as it was, combined with the 1.5” shorter stock…it got me good.

I love that gun.

For a budget scope, I suggest a Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 Dead-Hold BDC Riflescope. I've got this scope on a marlin 45-70 and it's held zero with no issues. The glass isn't as good as the Leupold Freedom, but i'm able to see my target good enough in low light situations (legal shooting hours).

Disclaimer: I don't own a lever action or a 30-30. Having said that, I think a 30-30 scope should be small and mounted close to the action. Given the effective range of the 30-30 (<200 yds for a skilled shooter), a 1-4x scope would be nice, especially if the hunts are close range. OTOH, a compact 2-7x would be better if the ranges are at the upper capabilities of the gun.
