The Triviality of Watching Sports on Television
Posted on 9/9/25 at 9:42 pm

This morning I put on one of the discussion shows on ESPN for the first time in a while.
For some reason, it was very strange to see the panelists talking about sports so passionately at 7am in the morning - it was the same intensity you see in news programs when guests are debating politics.
Don't get me wrong...I watched a solid 6 hours of college football and a couple of NFL games this weekend.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has suddenly started to find sports to be trivial and perhaps started watching less as a result.
I'll hang up and listen.
ETA:
For your troubles...

I watch the games and look forward to the next time Ryan Clark makes an arse out of himself on the instagrams. Other than that I don’t watch any of the sports shows.

People who listen/watch sports shows are usually passionate about sports. You want them to put people on tv who don't take it serious?

Related to that… I used to get upset when LSU or my team lost, especially to a hated rival, but now… after many decades… a single loss in any sport is absolutely meaningless. There’s always another day in sports.

Nothing wrong with recreational activities. Not everything we do all day must be purposeful or working towards some grand goal.
That said, the Screamin A. Smith and Colin Cowherd sports programming is aimed at people (men) who are at home on Tuesday at 10:30am. College kids and low IQ jobless types, mostly.

As I’ve aged I tend to just watch Auburn games. I’ll watch others that interest me like the Egg Bowl, but not too many. My wife is all Packers so I see their games also.

I’ve thought sports to be trivial the past 50+ years. My only exception is the teams where you went to High School or College.
I know some people that are over the top for some teams that they have absolutely no connection to. Very weird.

I've drifted out of it over the past 10 years to where I am now, I watch LSU baseball when it's convenient for me to do it. Watch other stuff when it's what everyone else is doing where I am. I dont get any enjoyment from sports anymore unless myself or someone I know is playing.

I don’t watch sports and never really have. I participated in my youth, but don’t have much interest watching as an adult.
I saw something similar the other day and the commentators were so serious, as if what they were saying had some bearing or import on anyone’s lives at all. It struck me as self important foolishness. That said, they were getting paid for it so I guess it was important to them.

I enjoy what I do but other than LSU, some SEC, some other and some NFL, I don’t care for much else, and it often occurs to me how silly the whole sports thing is and how it’s become this incredible humongous beast.

I fully get this. I used to be ride or die by LSU sports but honestly ever since covid i really don’t care that much
I still watch but don’t really get overly into it win or lose

The actual games help me escape all the BS. Talk shows and radio just drag you back into the BS.
Just grab a beer, enjoy a game, and leave the other stuff behind for a little while.

I always think I’m getting to this point then we start losing in a game and all of a sudden my body starts to get upset. I’ve gotten better about controlling it but it’s still there.

They were probably in the eastern time zone where it wasn’t quite so early!

Taking sports super, super, super seriously is for little kids and pathetic losers.
When I was a kid I took the W's and L's really hard like it was super important, earth shattering stuff.
When you get older, have a house, kids, job, bills to pay, cholesterol levels to check, shite like that, you realize how utterly trivial and silly sports is.
It's entertainment that some people take way to seriously. It's fine to watch, fine to follow, fine to have it as your hobby, but like any other hobby if you let it dominate your life that's rather sad.

Gameday, and sports commentary in general lost me in the late 90s. I watched what they "highlighted" from LSU games, when I was there and watched us frick a goat repeatedly during the game, but the commentary made it look like we were dominant. I lost trust and care after that. Now, I just want to watch the games, and mostly let the announcers STFU.
NIL has pushed me to give less of a shite about even LSU football. Who was playing where last year? Who knows? The Saints have mailed it in with QB decisions since the year before Brees retired. LSU baseball in the SEC season is stimulating. But Liverpool FC has taken the lead since COVID for me. I'm far more invested in them now than I am in anything involved with LSU or the Saints.
