LAKEWOOD, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) - A lawmaker in Ohio has proposed legislation that would allow utility companies to throttle your energy usage during periods of high demand, essentially giving control of customer thermostats.

State Rep. Roy Klopfenstein (R-Haviland) introduced House Bill 427, which he says will modernize Ohio’s energy regulations and help homeowners and small businesses save money while improving electric grid reliability.

And people really think EV's are the future... we can't even run our HVACs without causing issues to the grid... lets add 150 million EV chargers

While they’re all screaming about “The Handmaid’s Tale,” actual dystopian shite like this is playing out in real time.

And it will also allow the Power Company to control when you can cook your insect meals.

I wonder if OH is getting any AI data centers...sounds like a bill funded by the AI lobby to make sure their data centers stay up and running at all times

Have had 3 smart devices try to give utility company control and give me an initial rebate. They need to cut that shite out.

Someone is gonna get rich helping people bypass that. I’ll never have a smart thermostat. Good that we have these things called window units and mini splits.

When I got my new AC last year I refused to allow them to install a smart thermostat for this very reason.

I still have an analog meter LOL. They keep trying to strongarm me into swapping to a digital meter (that they can read remotely) but I am putting them off as long as I can. So the meter reader still comes to my house once a month, I make sure to offer him a cup of coffee and i give him garden produce etc.

I get not wanting to pay meter readers but I don’t want entergy being able to manipulate my meter

Don’t like it, but headline is histrionic bullshite. The bill would give companies the option of offering voluntary rebate programs, just like Texas has that caused the first round of histrionic freak outs a few years ago:

quote:

The bill encourages the establishment of voluntary demand response programs, where participating customers can allow utilities to temporarily adjust energy usage, such as raising thermostat settings or cycling water heaters, during periods of high demand. Customers are said to have the ability to override such actions, and utilities would be permitted to compensate participants with either an annual payment or a per-event fee.
