OB, please throw out some recs. Semiautomatic preferred. I know Benelli is considered one of the top options but damn they expensive. Trying to keep it around $1k

Find a used 1100 lt in good shape. Failing that, Franchi affinity.

I am going to throw something out there that I have and really enjoy. I've hunted quail with 1100 20ga and Browning O/U 20ga. 2 yearrs ago I got a Winchester SX4 20ga from a guy for my older son to hunt quail with. Great gun. Same action as the older Browning Gold Hunters. I like it so much, I am buying another one from a guy this Friday for my younger son. New, the price is right in your range. Bought the last one for 700 in like new condition. Buying this one for 450.00 in like new condition.

Gonna sound like a broken record on all my Shotgun recs. Find a b gun that fits you best and buy it.
Maybe consider a franchi or stoeger but I don't have any experience w them.
For example benelli is a great gun, just doesn't fit me as well as a beretta, so I shoot beretta semis ...

I really like my SX4 20 waterfowl. It’s smooth and probably the fastest cycling semi-auto shotgun out there. I have a Beretta A300 in 12 gauge too but lately I’ve been shooting the 20 more often.

This...Browning, Beretta, Benelli, in no particular order.

Browning A5 or Benelli SBE gets my current vote

Seconded.

I've got an 1100 from right around the 1970 time frame that I inherited from my Dad. Best shooting gun I ever picked up, don't remember it ever malfunctioning, and it has had thousands of rounds put through it.

It has a butt pad on it and the recoil is so light you can shoot it all day and not have your shoulder pay the price.

You should be able to find one in decent shape for under 1k I would think.

ETA: I haven't looked at their values in a while, went over to Gunbroker just to see, and holy cow, they have gone up! I still would look into one, even at 1k+.
