No idea what it says, but it's a cool piece. What are the dimensions (roughly)?

It is an Ohira natural whetstone. They tend to be soft and generally prized by people sharpening razors. I don't know Japanese so I don't know the grit or the exact stone but they are usually very fine. I know stones for woodworking tool sharpening but have run into these on occasion learning about those stones. If it is in good shape they normally fetch a pretty penny.

Pretty much covered by google image. Here is ChatGPT’s response:

quote:

The object in the image is a natural Japanese whetstone, used for sharpening blades. The text written on it is in Japanese kanji, along with some English. Here’s a breakdown of what it says: • On the right-hand side (vertical text): “????” (Renge Sen Ita) – This refers to a specific type or grade of natural whetstone. • The boxed text on the left: “??” (Ohira / Taihei) – Likely indicating the quarry or brand name. “Ohira” is a famous mine in Kyoto known for producing very high-quality sharpening stones. • The bottom right in English: “ohira” – Reinforces that this stone comes from the Ohira mine. • The top crest-like mark is likely a mine or wholesaler’s seal, certifying authenticity. This appears to be a Japanese natural sharpening stone from the Ohira mine, which are highly prized by chefs, carpenters, and collectors for their polishing qualities.

Me Japanese. Me play joke. Me put pee pee in your Coke!

Chinese stole this from the Japanese just like everything else.

Very rare item in Japanese.
