I always have wanted to try it. Anybody on the OT play? Any advice or tips for beginners?

Aim small, miss small.

I did back in the day but the course we used mostly was in the woods. It had a little tower. We would do capture the flag teams and then rotate. Last man standing free-for-als was fun too.
The competitive stuff with the inflatable bunkers was never fun to me.

last time I played I gave myself up to end the game and my friend's friend shot me the neck at about 15ft anyway
I had paint mixed with blood running down my shirt. had to fight back tears TBH.

Try taking one in the eye from that distance.
You won't do it twice.

Used to play a ton back in HS in the 2000s. Paintball has certainly fallen off a bit since its heyday in the early-mid oughts, but I still see lots of officially sponsored tournaments here in Florida, as well as plenty of rec courses.
If you’re just starting out for fun, find fields that have good rental package rates and a fair variety of different match types. Usually there is at least one woodsball field, some kind of CTF/Defend the Tower, and speedball (inflatable bunkers).
Your #1 cost is going to be paint itself, and depending on how trigger-happy you are, you can go through even a case of paint (2000 rounds) pretty quickly.
Like most group/team activities, it can be made or broken by the people you play alongside. From kitted-out try-hards (like me back in the day
), to corporate team-building, and kids’ birthday parties, you’ll run the gamut of different types of douchebags. If you have a couple of friends that are willing to play too, it will be better and cheaper since you can split paint costs.
If you start to love it, then you can start the search for your own equipment upgrades and also start looking for clubs/fields that are a little more competitive and consistent in terms of skill level.
It’s a fantastic adrenaline rush, way to stay fit, and to pretend to be the John Wayne war hero that we all imagine ourselves to be. Don’t worry so much about bleeding welts as much as rolling ankles, as the latter happens far more often. Bring soft-mold cleats if you want, or just some solid outside shoes you don’t mind ruining.
Enjoy, my guy!

Black and white photo because color was expensive in yearbooks back then.

In high school in the 90s we would go to Big Dave's in the Hammond area. We ended up playing the Loyola University paintball team one time. They took it very serious!

There used to be a paintball place north of I-12 a few miles east of Hammond. Lots of woods and a decent creek running through it. It was capture the flag and the guns were single shot pistols that you had to manually cock (heh heh! He said “cock”) between shots. The guns were surprisingly accurate.
This stuff with rapid fire long paintball guns in a confined playing field doesn’t look fun.

I did, years ago. It was fun, unless you get cracked on the knuckles or neck.

This ^
I’ve been hit in the neck, jewels, armpits, behind my earlobe, and the only hits that’ve ever brought me to my knees were ones that hit my exposed knuckles.
