Agree with most of the takes here: gameplay masterpiece with a story that I wanted to like, but that did not land.

I wish that they had bait and switched us at the very beginning of the game and had us play as Abby. Open on a total stranger and new group of friends, focus on making us like and relate to the WLF as a group of friends who care about each other, while gradually revealing more about their quest to Jackson and the motives behind it. Once you realize who Abby is, and why she’s going to Jackson, I feel like it would’ve given us that “oh shite” moment with a character we are starting to bond with.

Then, I’d have the game take on a more split narrative, with sections alternating between Abby and Ellie showcasing the respective repercussions of their actions on each other through Seattle Day 1, 2, 3.

Don’t know if it fixes anything, but give the players a better opportunity to bond with Abby before she kills Joel would have been a better way to have us sympathize with her, imo.
Ghost followed by RDR2, imo. As someone else said, Ghost is shorter and punchier, while RDR2 is much more of a slow burn. Both excellent, but different titles.

I’m a weenie so I don’t play the RE games

Is a Steam Deck something that would fall in the “cool enough” spectrum? Feel like the portability would really appeal to an 11yo, unless he’s specified that he wants a PC or laptop.
Split Fiction sells 1 million copies in first 48 hours

Glad to see that this game is performing well. I’m absolutely loving it so far. Might be early to talk GOTY contention, but I think it’s better than ITT which won a few years ago.

I’d be curious to see what the true player count is since lots of folks are probably playing on friend passes that they didn’t purchase.

I’d say it’s closer to SoW-style gameplay than AC, but there are some climbing/parkour elements to help with stealth verticality and traversal. Especially after you get access to the grappling hook around halfway through the story. They are not the core gameplay loop though, which is still shinobi or samurai focused.

Tsushima doesn’t really have the architecture style or topography to support serious parkour gameplay. The most you’ll do is walk on a tent wire or stand on top of a yurt.

Have about 500 hours in the first one, and it’s one of my all time favorites. I’ve played less of 2, but mostly because it was a poorly optimized mess at launch. It’s much better now, and with mods (like Long War), there’s not much that can rival the level of strategic and tactical depth the game gives you.

The game is punishing by design and will make you pay for your mistakes, so just roll with the punches and treat setbacks as fun story beats for your play through.

Best advice is to rotate your squad members early and focus on building a deep roster of soldiers. It’s easy to just regularly roll out with your A-team of Super Chads, but if they happen to get whacked by an encounter that didn’t break your way, it’s very difficult to come back from without depth in your barracks.
Bought this and booted it up with the wife last night and we’re having a blast. It Takes Two didn’t really land with me, even though it had its moments, but this is a smooth, ultra-refined couch coop experience.

Currently sitting at 97% approval on Steam

For a game that only costs $50 and includes a free friend pass, highly recommended picking this one up if you’re looking to couch coop with your SO or your kids.

I’m one of the ones who downvoted your take, and I probably wouldn’t have if you’d stopped at “the third act drags a bit” because I’d probably agree with you. Especially if you’ve 100% the game up to that point, you’re pretty OP and maxed out by the end of Act 2.

That said, claiming the game needs less content is a bit ridiculous. Side content is always optional and 100%-ing a game is a choice not suited for everyone.

Didn’t see it mentioned, but I really enjoyed playing through Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5. I preferred playing on PC, but it has been well optimized since Phantom Liberty released.

Play it with the Japanese voice dub, it enhances the experience as long as you don’t mind subtitles, imho.

Also, highly recommend Lethal difficulty, even for your first playthrough. You die quickly, but so do enemies, so it is a tough but fair difficulty that makes late game combat really rewarding.

Enjoy, my dude. It’s an exceptional game.
I’ve been playing pretty much daily since the Illuminate update and the game is as fun as it’s ever been for me.

The Gloom Terminids actually made the bugs scary again, and the Illuminate missions are always a fun blend of bots tactics and bugs horde. As you said, bots are bitches on all difficulties.

Would be down to link up with a regular group as opposed to dropping in with randos. That can sometimes be a coin flip between “fun as hell” or “complete disaster.”

At your price point, it could also be worth checking out a Steam Deck. Add yourself a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and you actually have a decently powerful Linux-based computer to play tons of recent titles on.
Just wanted to pop in to say how awesome this thread has been. Feels like a one-stop shop to get a feel for the team and get hyped for the season. Appreciate the work you put into this every year, Adam.

Bad Actors that somehow managed to nail a role.

Hayden Christensen in “Shattered Glass” always comes to mind here.

He took the whiny, entitled, unlikeable parts of Anakin and really morphed them into something compelling. Highly recommend.
It’s very much the same vein as those games, and it’s a ton of fun to learn as a new player. Community is really helpful and supportive for new players, so just go in and kill some bugs/bots/squids!

The new update has me all the way back. They’ve rectified quite a few of their earlier missteps and taken accountability for the bad calls they made. May not be enough for some, but I respect the commitment to actually heed community feedback.

There’s two downvotes to this post but no further comments

I didn’t expect my post to be that spicy of a take

FWIW IMO, get the regular, digital PS5 and use the savings to buy an extra controller, the controller docking port (a must for me because I hate wires), and the Madden/NCAA 25 bundle. There’s hundreds of hours of content to play there, and the extra controller lets you or a friend play with him if the situation arises.
Everything is digital now when it comes to buying games. Unless he plans on borrowing/sharing games with friends, the digital will be just fine.

As for the Pro, only get it if he/you has a higher-end TV that he will be playing on where he can really notice/take advantage of the higher settings or it’s going to be a moot point.

I always loved when Reali would throw the balled-up paper at the camera. Couldn’t hit shite.

I remember after one episode where he actually did hit the camera and started to celebrate like he hit a shot on Dude Perfect.

The best part IMO was the feed switched to PTI a second or so after for the most hilarious abrupt cut. Still remember my dad cracking up.
