I hold this song in extremely high regard, but you won't find many people who agree with you. For a guy known as a bassist, Greg Lake did some fine work with an acoustic sixer. (assuming you're talking about the ELP song)

I mean, no other song is so iconic that it's banned from guitar stores.

not my preference but I'd have to think Satisfaction by the Stones and You Really Got Me by The Kinks make a top 5 list.

Right band wrong song. Maybe song from the rock era, but for pure rock song I suggest;

Kashmir

How could you possibly argue that Kashmir is more iconic than Stairway?

Here are the only actual candidates:

Stairway to Heaven
Hey Jude
I Want to Hold Your Hand
We Will Rock You
Bohemian Rhapsody

In terms of what's mainstream iconic -

I'd put Sweet Home Alabama ahead of Freebird. Played more, covered more, featured more. Neil Young angle, etc. That's not a qualitative judgment.

Immediately identifiable and has less of the darker, slow burn quality of Freebird, Stairway, All Along the Watchtower, etc. (not bad, just arguably a detriment to mainstream iconic status - Bohemian Rhapsody being the outlier).

I can maybe say those are legit candidates.

Yea, I’m just saying those songs are on the list.

I think Stairway to Heaven is probably the winner.
