Louisiana CHP holders... renewing, or letting lapse and going with constitutional carry?

On the fence.

Having the CHP guarantees reciprocity in almost all permit states (some states with constitutional carry limit it to their citizens), plus you can carry within 1000 feet of a school and it makes gun purchases easy peazy.

But the time for the class and the cost (class and permit) are making me think.

I chose not to renew. It came down to how little I travel and where I travel to. If I go on vacation, most tourist places aren't gun friendly. It's not like I'm visiting the worst part of the city when on vacation.

I let mine lapse and I fricked up. Renew it. Having to start over from zero sucks.

If nothing else it's worth it just because it simplifies gun purchases.

I kept mine solely to be able to walk into a gun shop and purchase without being called in

I'm planning on renewing. It might help in court one day. It also might not but it makes me feel better. It also speeds up gun purchases so that's nice.

Going to renew. Travel for work out of state and no NICS call in on 4473 is worth it to me.

Let mine lapse. The places I travel for leisure will be way less dangerous than Baton Rouge or New Orleans.
My last couple gun purchases have been pretty quick 15-20min wait gonna take a while to make it worth it from that aspect for me.

In Alabama, I never renewed once constitutional carry was confirmed.

My biggest reason was the fricking fellow at the sheriffs office who laughed when I said hopefully one day we wouldn’t need to buy a permit.

Well, frick that little goober. They dont get that $20/year from me anymore.

I travel exclusively in the southern states and don’t see a problem.

Renew>. this is a huge factor; Section B below:

quote:

2793.12. Limitation of liability; concealed handgun permit; definitions; exceptions A.(1) As used in this Section, the term "authorized person" means any person with a valid concealed handgun permit issued pursuant to R.S. 40:1379.1, 1379.1.1, 1379.3, or 1379.3.2; any qualified law enforcement officer authorized to carry a concealed handgun pursuant to R.S. 40:1379.1.3 or 1379.1.4; or any person specified in R.S. 14:95(G)(3) and (4). (2) The term "authorized person" shall also apply to a reserve or active-duty member of any branch of the United States Armed Forces; a member of the Louisiana National Guard or the Louisiana Air National Guard; or a former member of any branch of the United States Armed Forces, the Louisiana National Guard, or the Louisiana Air National Guard who has been honorably discharged from service. B. An authorized person as defined in this Section shall not be liable for damages for any injury, death, or loss suffered by a perpetrator when the injury, death, or loss is caused by a justified use of force or self-defense through the discharge of a firearm by the authorized person. This provision shall preclude any right of action by the perpetrator, his survivors, or his heirs. C. The provisions of Subsection B of this Section shall not be applicable to the following: (1) Acts or omissions that constitute gross negligence or intentional misconduct or that result in a valid and final felony conviction in this state. (2) Any person without authorization pursuant to Subsection A of this Section at the time of the events giving rise to a claim. D. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to limit or abrogate other immunities, limitations on liability, or defenses provided for in any other provision of law. E. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to limit third party liability and property damage exposure from a criminal actor's contributory negligence that causes the lawful actions of the individual claiming limitation of liability.

I let mine lapse…but only because going through the same boring arse class with a bunch of idiots for the 4th time was more than I could put up with for the very minor advantages the permit offered.

Had it been an auto renewal with a simple shooting test I would have renewed again

Exactly — the qualified immunity is the biggest reason I will always keep mine.

How could someone without a CHP be held liable for the justified use of force or self-defense? Not sure I understand the protection this limitation of liability is providing.

The thing to keep in mind is that stand ground rules vary wildly. I don’t see the point in carrying in a state where short of being shot at, you will get in trouble for defending your self

CHP is just another government extortion.

The founding fathers assured your right to keep and bare arms.

I renewed for this extra freedom protection bonus level and that I travel the southeast often.

I believe you are not supposed to carry within 1000 feet of a school, church, public areas without CWP so for me its the technical law protections it gives and reciprocity being the biggest for me
