Grant Gardner made contact with his wife on July 29 "letting her know he’d made it to the summit" of the 13,000-foot Cloud Peak, but has not been heard from since, according to the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. The agency launched a search and rescue operation in what it described as "extreme and very challenging" conditions.
"He solo hikes, and he’s been hiking for over a decade," his wife Lauren Gardner told Cowboy State Daily. "He’s used to this stuff, and he’s very detail oriented."
"It’s all definitely surreal," she reportedly added. "And I’m in shock, I think, and trying to stay strong for the kids. This has never happened in all the years he’s gone out. He knows what he’s doing and has the skills. I’m just hoping right now."
The missing 38-year-old is a father of two children, ages 13 and 11, the outlet reported.
The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office said Gardner had planned an approximate 3-day hike "through the Misty Moon Lake area, eventually summiting Cloud Peak, and returning to his vehicle completing his journey."
Phone records show he reached the summit of Cloud Peak around 7 p.m. on July 29 and sent a text to his wife indicating that "the climb was more taxing than he expected and he was tired," according to authorities.
"The late summit of 7:00pm at 13,000 feet was and is concerning due to the lack of visible trails through cliffs, timber line, boulder fields, and other hazards that had to be navigated after dark before reaching clear trails and safe terrain," Big Horn County Sheriff Ken Blackburn said.
Police said Gardner’s vehicle later was found by searchers in the same parking lot where he began his trip.
The search is rapidly evolving and ongoing in the Cloud Peak Wilderness area. In addition to high altitude and terrain challenges, difficult weather patterns including winds, thunder and lightning storms have made search efforts difficult at various times of the day," the Sheriff’s Office said in a search update this week.
"Search and rescue teams from South Big Horn County, Sheridan County, Johnson County, Washakie County, and Park County Wyoming along with other rotor aircraft from First Flight of Wyoming, Wyoming Army National Guard, and private aircraft" are assisting in the effort, they also said.

Guess he decided it was time to take a hike.

Dumbass doing this alone with 2 young children. Single and no children? Go knife fight sharks for all I care.

I'm sorry, but hiking solo when you have a family, especially young kids at home, is selfish and stupid. I hope the guy is found safe, but that doesn't sound encouraging.

Normally I would agree but I went on a long hike/hunt by myself and it was totally relaxing and thought about doing it again. Seeing this makes me realize how fricked I would have been had something happened. I had zero cell service for hours in a deep ravine and would have been waiting a day or two hoping someone found me.

Hiking alone is not some crazy dangerous exercise. Millions of people with kids have drinks and drive cars every single day, a far more dangerous activity.

I solo hike all the time... albeit in the Smokies at much lower elevation, but shite can still happen.

Hopefully no one will get hurt trying to find him.

Should always have an inreach or personal locator beacon for adventures like these.

I would be willing to say he hooked up with a Cougar as a travel partner. He does look like a Bear type of guy but who knows these days.

While I agree, I also think you need to be smarter about the hikes you take. This sounds like an extreme hike, so it is a bit selfish in that regard.
I have passed on risky outings the last several years for the sole reason I don’t want to risk leaving my young children fatherless. It’s selfish of me to take those risks now. I like to hike, but I stick with reasonable trails that pose little risk. Plus I do it with my wife and even my kids on easier trails

I think it's a thin line between doing things that will inspire, influence and set an example for your kids and doing reckless things.
I think this (solo hike) may reasonably fall into the former, although not knowing when to cut your losses and turn back or not being prepared for an emergency can turn it into the latter.
I do think boys especially need to see their dads tackle challenging things - including some with an appropriate amount of risk.

Very true!
One possibility is that he was a little under the weather, got sicker, and could not find his way down. Then with night coming on he might have sought shelter in a cave. From there anything - dehydration, heart attack - could have left him helpless.

shite my dad did this every weekend. If something was going to happen it would have been something that would have happened while he was with us.
This dude got eaten by a bear.
