Are 2015+ GM SUV/trucks that unreliable?

I think they look great, but I'd be worried buying a used one out of warranty. Seems like they have a lot of engine and tranny issues. Even failing at very low mileage. That 10 speed auto is $6K+.

Eyeing getting a 21' Tahoe/Yukon.

My mechanic says anything GM past 2010 is awful. I have a 4 Runner and tacoma so can’t say from experience

I can't speak specifically to potential electrical or electronics issues but I bought a used 2018 Yukon Denali in early 2024. Did a full DOD/AFM delete and got a new cam and tune.. absolutely worth it - runs like a scalded dog.

LINK

As for the 10 speed, there are some kits you can buy to get upgraded parts and improve reliability. I'd advise one of the full billet steel valve bodies and an upgraded torque converter. Luckily my original 10 speed is running fine but if it were to shite the bed I'd make these upgrades.

Those are the main 2 reliability issues you may be faced with. Otherwise, comfortable and hauls the family nicely. Got 112k now on it and running strong.

EDIT: I would also run 0W-40 oil instead of the factory-advised 0W-20. We are in a very hot southern climate and the recent issues with newer 6.2s spinning bearings led me to research and change viscosity.

So to make this trick reliable, you need a top end engine and transmission rebuild? No thanks.

Most modern vehicles aren't lasting as long as previous generations. So yes, if you get a used one in good shape and bulletproof it with a little front-end investment you should get another 10 or so years out of it.

they were real bad from 07 to 14 on the 5.3. the 4.8 didn't have that AMD feature. What I've read and believe to be true is you need to check the oil every 1000 miles, and change the oil often. Supposedly some enhancements were made in 2015 up but I'd do the same on being careful with the oil.

I bought a 2024 Yukon XL last June with the 6.2L which I assumed was bulletproof as it didn't have the lifter issues that the 5.3L had. I'm at roughly 12k miles and no issues though there is now a recall out on all Escalade, Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon/Yukon XL models from 2019-2024 with the 6.2L.

Apparently they may decide to just explode.

My 2020 has been rock solid other than the failed tourque convertor, failed fuel pump control module and aggregating as hell dfm vibration. Oh and the shitty dry rotting tires. And the drivers door lock button that broke off in the door.

Other than that, still perfect at 41,000 miles.

FYI, the Tahoe is basically the same exact power train as thd truck.

And yet, people continue to buy that shite. There’s always one owner who somehow never has problems, and it justifies a 100 other idiots buying Chevy.

2006 was the last year of solid and dependable trucks under GM. 07-13 was decent but the company was in full blown soccer/team mom mode by the end of that generation. They just needed to look good and have a luxury feature or two.

Nah they are okay. L84 engine is very good.

6.2L anything is risky.

I have a 2023 Z71 Tahoe with 36k miles. No issues so far (knock on wood) but bought the extended warranty out of fear from hearing so many bad things. It’s a shame if true because it’s a very smooth driving truck and comfortable for the whole family.

Had to replace the transmission on my 2017 Tahoe just over100k
miles.

I was going to say other than that I’ve had no issues until I remembered there was this wild week probably two years into having the car where it would totslly shut off while I was making a turn. Not cool at all. Took it to the dealer and it was a cause of corroded wiring. Hasn’t happened since.

I can attest that my wife’s 2015 Tahoe is a piece of shite and I’ll never buy another gm vehicle again.

It’s small and and moderate things.

Touch screen radio doesn’t work, just jumps around randomly with “ghost inputs”
Rear seat video monitor doesn’t work
Fancy electronic shocks leaked anll over garage and don’t work, replace with Amazon version because dealership wanted $4k to factory replace.
Rear air ride compressor went out and staying out because I don’t need that
Thermostat and thermostat reader went out (fricks with electric fans and ac)
Paint is shite, hood all fricked up

These are little things but none are from lack of maint. They just turn to shite.

And I’m waiting for the transmission to physically fall off of the bottom of it any day now

I bought a new Truck in 2023, it's almost embarrassing to admit what I paid for it vs what it's worth today.

Terrible investment, if I had to do it over I'd buy one used with 20-30K miles on it

I don’t know a single person that has GM truck large SUV made in the last ten years that has made it to 150k without having motor or transmission replaced. Oftentimes both replaced by then. They have also all been plagued with other gremlins. It’s a shame what GM vehicles have become.

I bought a 2014 Silverado with 30k miles on it a few years back from a big dealer in Mississippi.
About 2-3 week later the torque converter went out. It was just out of the warranty timeline . Lesson learned . I’m forever scarred from buying a newer Chevy.
Only one post ‘14 I’d consider is the new hd gasser with Allison tranny .
