New laws starting today

Fines begin January 2026, but will they be enforced?

Traffic & Driving Regulation
Distracted Driving ‘Touch’ Law
Starting August 1, hand-held phone use while driving is prohibited. Drivers may only use phones hands-free, and texting, emailing or social media usage—even hands-free—is banned. First violations yield warnings; fines begin January 2026.
Slow-Driving Penalties (Left-Lane Blockers)
Act 24 lowers threshold to ticket drivers going just 1 mph under the posted speed limit in the left lane. First offense = $150, rising to $250 or $350 for additional offenses within a year. Repeat offenders may face up to 30 days in jail. Aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving highway flow.

Child Grooming Becomes a Stand-alone Felony
Act 97 (SB 58) criminalizes grooming: establishing an emotional or psychological relationship with someone under 17 for the purpose of future sexual abuse. Applies when offender is at least four years older. No abuse need have yet occurred. Effective August 1, 2025.

A bunch of new things, maybe re-packaged.

Yes. You can't even sing along to the radio. No checking out women standing on the corner. All distractions are imprisonment.

Will this be enforced like the law about not driving slow in the fast lane?

What about teachers and parents grooming little boys and girls to be gays or trannies?

Love how you can’t hold a phone to make a phone call anymore but you can have a giant iPad built into your dashboard.

Doing the speed limit and passing in the left lane are both remnants of a patriarchal and white supremacist society. We have to do better

This is great and terrible. Someone driving through a speed trap town in the left lane might see a cop on the side of the road, slow down to below the speed limit to be cautious, and still get a ticket. But I hope that they do enforce it for people fricking up traffic. On 2 lane interstates, I've seen Nissan drivers in the left lane that I'm 99% sure purposefully match the speed of someone in the right lane for extended stretches just to piss people off.

Ok I’m sure all the cops will pull themselves over because they’re just as guilty as any one else.

This is going to be next to impossible to prove absent actual abuse or a paper trail, which are already crimes. Add it to the list of stupid, repetitive, and unnecessary criminal statutes.

If people would just learn to accelerate instead of braking when trying to merge onto the interstate, that would help traffic congestion a lot.

Just another excuse to legitimize a stop for a traffic violation in order to ask consent to find the meth in your console.

This is a dumb law. No, I'm not in favor of slow drivers in the "fast" lane, but I find it completely asinine that it is illegal to drive in the left lane unless you are going exactly the speed limit. One mile an hour over or under the speed limit is now breaking the law!

Let’s compare the amount of accidents caused by cell phone distractions versus singing along with a song on the radio. Or the number caused by looking at someone standing along the street. Try harder.
