How much money would you spend on your dog's health ?

Ours is of course like a family member but this is getting ridiculous.
1. He had a tumor on his jaw and one on his arse last year that the vet thought was cancer, removal + biopsy (negative)+ anesthesia + $2,200.00
2. One tumor came back so they suggested neutering to stop whatever hormone was causing it. $1,800.00
3. Now we found out he has Cushing's Disease, initial office visit plus blood, urine, Cushing's test $900.00
4. Medication to cure or regulate Cushing's $115.00 a month for the rest of his life plus we have to do 2 more blood draws at $345.00 each in two week intervals
So I'll be out 5K plus $115.00 a month for who knows how long
My dad would have knocked him in the head long ago

Whatever it takes, assuming a good quality of life.

Assuming the treatments cure/regulate the Cushing's, what is the life expectancy after all of these treatments. How will this affect his quality of life?

I'll spend my last dime if required.
Beaux had oral surgery to remove a large growth not too long ago.
I barely have any funds right now. Cost of living has skyrocketed. My income decreased even though I'm working more than ever.

I knew a woman who would give her cat dialysis twice a day due to kidney failure. She'd put the cat on the kitchen counter, then start an IV with a drip bag.

We found little Foxy Momma out walking on the street, no telling how long she was out there. We love her but I just couldn't imagine spending thousands on a dog... I grew up on a farm and never had an indoor dog before. Mom said our farm dog, J, died a few months ago. He had been hit by a car, bit 2 times by snakes and fought off a coyote. That baw saw some shite, but he finally died after old age. Never took him to the vet

<$1000 but I was raised on a farm and have a “hard heart” about these things.

I’m over 20k for an adopted Great Dane that’s probably 6 now so at least 20k
Aspirated pneumonia 2 days in emergency vet and pills was $9000 in December of 23. A few Sundays ago he got bloat so back to the emergency vet $10,300 to unflip his stomach and spleen or $400 to put him down.
When we adopted him he was heart worm positive and had other issues that we got fixed and that was a few grand around 4 years ago. The rescue did not help and we went with the fast treatment on the heart worms because he was so young.

$25 a month pet insurance would cover that.
Paid me back $6k when my dog had her Spleen removed and other surgery related to Cancer.

You are only considering you and your wife’s feelings with these decisions.
Have you thought about the dogs quality of life?

it tough. several things go into that calculation that are incompatible.
i've recently had to make that decision. still have a massive hole in my heart.
don't envy you in the slightest.

My last 2 dogs had pretty great health thankfully.
After losing them, i decided that i didn’t want to deal with all that again. Miss having a dog but i like the freedom of not having to deal with a pet anymore

We have pet insurance and it very much would depend on what it was and their quality of life afterwards.

I suppose it depends on how much you can afford for your beloved Princess or Duke. If you’ve got a million lying around what’s 10 grand for the pooch? Also, age. If they already have one paw in the grave, I wouldn’t spend much.
