What are your thoughts on these? My work friends keep asking me to go but told them I don’t do buffets. Just something about lots of strangers breathing over a buffet just turns me off. They tell me it’s not buffet but order all you want from a iPad and they bring it to you. They say it’s really good. $20 lunch AYCE.

I guess it would be good if you wanted to try a lot of different rolls.

If youre looking for great sushi, you wont find it there. But if you want buffet quality sushi then go for it. It's not great and its not bad. It's just OK from my experience.

I've eaten at those sorts of places and the conveyor belt sushi places and they are all pretty decent.

The only one I know of around here (Sushi Kingdom) will charge you extra for food you order but don't eat.

The ones I have been to are all you can eat, but not buffets. They give you a menu and you order off of it till time runs out or you full as a tick. Only place Ive saw it served buffet style is at Chinese Buffets.

There were a few in the N.O. area that offered "All you can eat" for a set price. One was on Williams Blvd. in Kenner and one was near my house on Canal and Carrollton where the Ochsner Outpatient Clinic now sits.

Both were around $15 at the time (20 years ago) and they offered a pretty full menu of offerings if sushi was not your main interest.

I would eat at them at least twice a month and it was a damn good deal and I never had any issue, health wise, eating buffet style.

I can't say I know of any place that still does that in the N.O. area and if there were, I would assume COVID shut them down for good.

They are hit and miss.

You will have some like Sushi Masa (which I used to wreck in college routinely) that have terrible "sushi" and only offer a handful of rolls most of which do not have raw fish and are packed with rice. Then you will have others like Sushi Yami, Ohayo, Akira that are good decent quality sushi that don't try to screw you by packing the rolls with rice and shorting on fish.

Bottom line is you will not go to one of the AYCE sushi places and leave saying this is the best sushi I have ever had, but I have certainly been to non AYCE sushi restaurants that had worse sushi than some of the AYCE places.

At the right AYCE sushi place, you will get good decent sushi along with soup/appetizers/sashimi/rolls all for $20 at lunch. If you go with a few people its a good way to get a wide variety of appetizers/rolls/sashimi everyone can share.

Ohayo in Prairieville just gives out a menu and they bring it to your table.
There is no buffet line.

I don't really care for them, I've gone to Sushi Masa in Lafayette a couple times and don't like to eat until I feel like shite and the sushi is middle of the road quality. It's something like $34 for AYCE and a domestic beer/well cocktail, so for my wife and I that works out to ~$80 after tip if you don't order any other drinks. I'd rather just go to better sushi restaurant and for the same/not much more money get better quality food and good cocktails. Their prices for lunch make it a not so terrible deal, but I have no interest in going for dinner.

That sounds nice. One of the hardest things to do at Sushi Masa in BR is getting a second order in.

I love sushi but it’s not the kind of food I want to stuff myself with. For me quality is much more important than quantity when it comes to sushi.

You are doing yourself a disservice basing your opinion of AYCE sushi places off of Sushi Masa FWIW. Find one that offers their normal sushi roll menu on the AYCE.

Personally, I like them a lot, mainly because I have a gigantic appetite and can get my money's worth. I was a regular at Sushi Masa, but I've converted to Ohayo since it's closer. The quality isn't the best, but it's still good.

Ikura does AYCE sushi on Carrollton and Bienville, just a short walk from the Ochsner outpatient clinic you mentioned. It is not bad quality either.

Thanks for the heads up. Good to know and I will have to give it a try one day.
