Planning on going do some work at the camp maybe just jump up and hang a stand real quick!!! Don’t leave the ground without being tied off. Even hall of famers fall. Just saw it on FB

I’m too old and out of shape for this shite. That’s why I hunt from box stands.

His FB showed him at his place in MS three days ago.

Saw that and hate it for him. Ben seems like a good dude. I did get a laugh out of the "it must have broke. I don't fall." comment from him though.

I think he changes locations between LA/MS/MD more often than I change socks, during baseball season.

If it was really 25ft he's dang lucky.
I can handle falling and dying but I wear a harness because I couldn't handle falling and being paralyzed for the next 30 years.

They said the strap or chain broke.
I cringe all the time stepping from my sticks to a lock-on, especially for the first time of the year.
I don't trust that freaking strap.

I’m Ben’s age. I quit climbing several years ago. I’m just not doing it anymore

Brings up a good topic, everyone just uses ratchet straps on their lock on's, or is there something better baw's came up with?
F-I-L always said he used chains when he was young, but that was long before ratchet straps became so easy.

I remember the time when I used to be in a lease in MS and I was getting ready to go out in the woods and I was putting my harness on. One of the old guys demeaningly said “you scared?”
I said “yes. Absolutely I’d be scared and you should to”
The arrogance as to why people don’t wear a harness is something I’ll never understand

I use millennium lock-ons with the metal brackets I also add a ratchet strap for added safety.

I hate stepping off the sticks to the stand as well. I feel 1000x safer in my saddle than a lock on. But maybe using chains would ease my mind. Never thought of that.

ratchet straps
I've had the hooks to these break before on the ones I keep in back of my truck. The rubber coating holds water and accelerates the rusting. Eventually the pitting gets bad enough in the bend of the hook that it snaps. I've taken a razor blade and cut off the rubber coating on the rest of the straps so hopefully to keep them from rusting as bad or at least I can see if its happening.

It’s definitely a change from “back in the day” I’m almost 50 and still hunt climbers/locon/saddle and I never go up without one but growing up my dad uncles and grandpa never even told me to wear one. I can remember climbing up with screw on steps holding on and hanging a loc-on and never wearing a harness when I was 13 or so.
My pawpaw lost his grip and fell from about 14ft of so when he was in his 60s and broke his back and was laid up in a brace for months. He recovered but being laid up like that started a gradual decline in his health.
I know of several personally tbat have fallen and were lucky and every time they said “I knew better but was just gonna go up for a second or I had just been on that stand with my harness a few days before”

We have all done some unsafe things as it relates to hunting but this was just plain stupid. In the mid 80’s a High school friend had property on the Ticfaw River. They built platforms in the tops of the tallest cypress trees they could find. Steel pipe for steps and no safety ropes. At times we were actually shooting down at ducks. Can’t believe we did that.
