PSA driving with hazards on in the rain makes less safe

Who is out there teaching their kids and loved ones to drive in the rain with their hazards on? It's illegal in most states and it should be illegal everywhere. Don't be retarded. If you don't feel comfortable driving in a downpour, pull over onto the shoulder and then put your hazards on. When I can't see your blinkers or brake lights as well, you're jeopardizing everyone on the road.
Go forth and tell your friends and family now.

With all the rain we have had this summer, I've been waiting on this thread.

I'm going to drive in the Passing Lane with my Emergency Hazard lights blinking and flashing like crazy next time it rains !!

I think it’s a minority/hispanic thing. Never saw it until I moved to Texas. Was in McAllen last week and hit a storm. Literally 80% of vehicles went hazard mode. All I got.

I see it a lot more than I used to. Even during summertime thunderstorms which you’ll drive out of in minutes. It’s stupid.

OT thread about driving with hazards on in the rain:

This is mainly a cultural thing

VERY true, when I see hazard lights in a rain storm, I automatically think it is a stopped vehicle.

This is my reaction.

Having been caught in some torrential downpours on the interstate, I'm usually pretty thankful to better see the vehicles in front of me.

I used to get irrationally angry. But now I look at it differently. It immediately identifies the poor drivers on the road making it easier for me to avoid them.

I get your point, but I'm guessing your the guy that regardless of weather/road conditions drives at least 5 mph over the speed limit and always bitches about everyone else.

Drives me crazy too. Low income and low IQ move

Setting aside laws, convention, and expectations, rear rain lights, particularly flashing ones, make cars much more visible in rain and road spray, period. This is the reason almost every motorsport series from SCCA to F1 requires them.
Rain lights would make rain/spray safer we just need a separate option to indicate a car is stopped. We also need the laws and expectations to be the same throughout the country regarding their use.

I don’t use them myself, but I’ve also never seen a wreck caused by hazards during the rain.

I don’t turn mine on but it makes cars easier to see. Weird to get so mad about it
Posted on 7/13/25 at 5:04 pm to DustyDinkleman
Exactly, it's such a dumb thing to get upset about. I don't do it and it doesn't really help but it also doesn't hurt and it makes no sense for the constant whining about it on this board.

I don't like it, I think it's really dangerous in heavy rain. I instantly think of a car being stopped when I come up on these.

I automatically assume every other driver is stupid.
Since I live in LA, Im correct 95% of the time.

I agree completely. However, I did once see a sign that instructed drivers to turn them on in heavy rain. Can’t remember where, and it’s stupid.
Eta: why do idiots here downvote a factual statement. I didn’t make it up. I’ve driven the country back and forth up and down numerous times the past 35+ years of driving. I’ve seen a lot of shite.
