ESPN gives Saints worst offseason grade in NFL

But their veteran signings muddled that vision. Chase Young’s $17 million per year deal is steep for a player with health concerns on a rebuilding team. Justin Reid at $10.5 million annually is solid in a vacuum, but again, cap space should be sacred for a team with limited financial wiggle room. And giving tight end Juwan Johnson more than $21 million guaranteed only compounds the confusion. The Saints had chances to build for the future, but too often chose the path of short-term patches. ESPN’s “D” grade might feel harsh, but when judged by the decisions they intended to make, it may be generous.

1. Mickey is still deluded that this team can compete
2. We have to overpay for above average FAs
3. You have to have a few vet leaders. Whether these guys are or are not leaders is another question

ESPN isn’t going to know what to do next year when we clear out all of our dead cap.
Young’s contract is marginally more than Granderson’s, and is the market value for an average edge rusher. Same for Juwan. His contract puts him at 12th highest average per year, which matches his production.

It’s funny (true but funny) that they chastise the team for not trying to reset the cap with their moves; but also won’t give them credit for the fact that this team truly is setup for a full cap reset in 2 years. It was nearly impossible for them to completely reset the cap in 1 season, and they almost made it a lot worse when they reworked Carr’s deal.

Did you want them to sign a bunch of high priced free agents?

ESPN calling Mickey out for not actually embracing a rebuild. But you aren’t allowed to talk about that here. You can’t say anything negative about Mickey or Chad will make a cry post about you. More sparkle helmets please!

Does anyone on this board think JJ is the 12th best te in the league? Hes one of the worst blocking tight ends in the entire league and maybe average receiving.
For a team trying to get out of cap hell, his signing and Cooks was idiotic.
Reid and Chase were needed b/c our edge draft picks have been dreadful and we have zero talent at safety.

I'm as delusional a fan as anyone, but there is way too much smoke out there for there to be no fire. An awful lot of experts would have to be wrong for us to exceed these expectations. Hope it happens but I dunno...

I remember the Saints brought in that guy from the Vikings for a visit not long ago. Bullard?
I think he would be a good but not great addition to the line
I don't really have any sort of expectation for this year. It's going to be interesting. That's for damn sure because if this is a disaster then perhaps Mickey will be skating on thin ice. But on the other hand if the Saints do better than people think that they will then maybe we can start wondering if they made a really good hire.
Just as long as the d-line is n't weak against the run, I saw that movie last year and it sucked plus the speed at linebacker was also lacking. You can bind those too and that's one of the reasons they were one of the teams that were dead last stop in the run.

What would've gotten us a higher grade? We basically signed a few mid-level free agents to 2-3 year deals, a couple of which were our own. If we had "embraced the rebuild" and done nothing at all, you think ESPN would've given us an A? Of course not, Saints were getting a D no matter what.

It would’ve been in the B- range if they had embraced the rebuild; the draft was full of reaches so they weren’t getting an A regardless.
It’s almost indisputable that the rebuild should’ve happened when Brees retired, but we kicked the can and hitched our wagon to journeyman QBs like Winston and Carr. We also hired a HC that was an abject failure with the Raiders.
I’m not sure why so many of you have confidence in Loomis and the “Saints can do no wrong”. Worse yet, we have a clueless owner who holds nobody accountable thus you have 2 franchises at the bottom of their leagues.
Gayle could buy the LA Dodgers today and in 5 years they’d be a 70 win franchise in MLB.

Most of this board has bitched about Loomis, they just think you aren't very knowledgable about anything football related and give you a hard time.

Something happened in the middle of last football season, I can't quite put my finger on. Something even Loomis disagreed with her about. Hmmmmmm

There was nothing the Saints could have done, short of trading for Joe Burrow, that would have earned them a better grade from ESPN.
Overspend? The Saints are delusional!. D-
Underspend and do nothing? The Saints don't realize how bad their roster is and did nothing to improve it! D-
Sign a few mid level free agents? These players aren't good enough to help this team to win! The Saints suck. D-

This season just doesn’t matter. If Shough looks like he can be a starter and Moore looks competent it’s a win. 2026 we need to make a jump, and 2027 is the season where we need to be competitive.

Due to Loomis and Payton taking years to Fukk Up the Saints Salary Cap…
All you can do now In The Off- Season is…
1) Try to clear the Salary Cap by letting Bad deals expire.
2) Cutting players.
3) NOT signing any high price free agents.
It’s Salary Cap Hell and the Chief reason Sean Payton left town !!
