Rehiring coaches that were fired previously

I see this happen a decent bit in the NHL. The Stars just recently hired a Glen Gulutzan, who they fired 12 years ago, so this will be his second stint as head coach.
I know the Ducks did it with another coach they had awhile back. I've seen it happen in the MLB, but I can't think of any examples in either the NBA or NFL off the top of my head.
Wonder why it's not as taboo in hockey as it is in the other sports. This would probably NEVER happen in the NFL today. Fans would revolt.

Carlisle was fired by the Pacers in 2007 and rehired in 2021.

It isn’t taboo in baseball. Or at least not in the 70s and 80s.
Billy Martin would get fired and rehired by Steinbrenner on an irregular basis.

The NFL is always recycling coaches

This.
Billy Martin (5x), Tony La Russa (CWS), technically Alex Cora, Paul Richard’s, Bucky Harris, Yogi Berra, and John Gibbons have all had it happen.

It's going to happen in Fayetteville this year unless the Hawgs win 8 games, which is a lot given their brutal schedule:
August 30 - Alabama A&M
September 6 - Arkansas State
September 13 - at Ole Miss
September 20 - at Memphis
September 27 - Notre Dame
October 11 - at Tennessee
October 18 - Texas A&M
October 25 - Auburn
November 1 - Mississippi State
November 15 - at LSU
November 22 - at Texas
November 29 - Missouri

Raheem Morris was technically not fired by ATL, but he was walked out the door after serving as interim-HC and getting "rehired' In 2024
I edited my original response after realizing OP meant rehired by the same franchise. Question back to OP, as it was 12 years ago in your example, was the rehiring under new ownership?

Recycling and a team rehiring a head coach that it has previously fired are two different things.

He also wasn't fired by Rutgers. He left them for an NFL job

Not necessarily fired and rehired by the same team, but apparently there are only like 35 people who are allowed to coach in the NBA

It's bizarre how insular the pool of NFL head coaches are.
There are guys who have been fired from 3 different teams getting hired by a 4th team.
