Brooks Falls, Katmai National Park, Alaska
I’ve been watching this for hours. It’s like a buffet of fish for these brown bears!

Catching the bear necessities I see.

They say 90% of the Salmon make it up the river to their destination. Doesn't seem like that would be the case, looking at this group.

That's awesome. And extremely calming.

I watched it recently. Those bears sit there just scoping salmon. It is cool. And relaxing white noise.

i've been watching these guys since 2017...last year was kind of difficult to watch since my favorite #480 Otis failed to return...he was probably the oldest boar at the falls, and was very calming to watch...there were also a number of spring cubs and yearlings that were killed or went missing...so far, this year there are much greater numbers of fish, so most of the bears are more relaxed...
also, there are 6 cameras in total...2 at the falls, one a little way down river, then one underwater cam and 2 others near the camps further down river...

May they have a more peaceful year this year. Last year was full of all kinds of bear drama.

Nature never ceases to amaze me. This current shot in the dark really shows the amount of salmon trying to head upstream and negotiate the falls to continue their journey.
It's no wonder the bears are there feasting on them when they are in those numbers in the water. It's near impossible to miss catching a salmon for dinner.

Guarantee if I dropped a line every Salmon in that area would vanish

I love how those huge brown bears have the dexterity to hold those salmon down while they use their teeth to strip the skin off the fish and eat it so they can get to the red flesh underneath.

The salmon swimming now timed it smart, no bears feeding. 2:22 CST

Yeah I just checked and saw the same. All the bears must be full

so far this year, there are so many salmon that some of the younger bears have been playing "catch and release"...
they also "high grade" at times, eating only the skin, brains and eggs...the parts with the highest fat content...
the before and after pictures for fat bear week are amazing!

Is that a loop? None of those salmon are making it upstream.

they estimate that each fish might try to make the jump up to 10 times before getting past the lip of the falls...

I've been there during this exact time period. It's even cooler than it looks.
When you watch, you are on an elevated boardwalk, and there are bears walking under and around you.
