Mississippi River bridge project hit with another delay

(The Center Square) – Louisiana officials expressed concern on Monday about a project to build a new Mississippi River Bridge south of Baton Rouge, which will now be delayed another few months.
The Capital Area Road and Bridge District met to discuss progress on the new bridge, which is to be located at one of three sites under review south of the Horace Wilkinson Bridge, which carries Interstate 10 into Baton Rouge.
The proposed bridge will connect State Routes 1 and 30 near the town of Plaquemine, but is a year behind schedule and is only in the environmental evaluation phase. Lawmakers have appropriated $400 million for the project, which is likely to cost at least $2 billion.
quote:
Christina Brignac, the assistant administrator of Critical Projects for the Transportation Department, said "with some hesitancy," that the National Environmental Policy Act phase, which requires public meetings, should start in mid-July and that should take a year to complete.
Originally, the Transportation Department estimated the policy would be complete by spring of 2026.
"There's several questions on how we're going to mitigate some of these impacts and the control of access to LA30 and LA1. So we want to get those worked out first," Brignac said. "We want to make sure we have those tie-ins and impacts mitigated before we initiate NEPA."
quote:
Iberville Parish President Chris Daigle, one of the district commissioners, wasn't buying the explanation.
"All this sounds like to me is continued delay, continued delay, continued delay," Daigle said. "When I first came on last year, we were almost supposed to be at the completed end of NEPA now and here we are being delayed again because of what I'm being told is delayed task managers or mitigating the impacts on LA1 and LA30 and it seems like that should have already been done before now."
The bridge, with three possible locations, will add another river crossing in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area and is projected to cost at least $2 billion.
There are three sites being considered, with the northernmost crossing at River Mile 206 involving two tower foundations. The other two alternatives, at River Miles 202.8 and 202.1, requiring three main towers.
Phase one of the project, which included an enhanced planning study, concluded in the summer of 2022.

It’ll never be ready in time.

I don't understand why they don't just build a interstate that goes over the sunshine bridge and bypasses BR Gross Tete to Sorrento. Probably 20% the cost of building a bridge. They can even run it up to 12 and tie in around Satsuma.

Come on, dude. You don’t want all those travelers from outside the area to be able to drive over and personally see the atrocities taking place at Cancer Alley.

Louisiana gonna Louisiana.

Don't distract them and bring on a bunch of new studies...Still need a bridge

And people wonder why taxpayers don’t trust their government to deliver value.

This state needs an enema.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that route involve a significant amount of highway needing to be built through existing swamp that's in the Morganza floodplain? Meaning they'd have to build a bridge / elevated highway for a large chunk of that route between Gross Tete and the Sunshine Bridge.
Not sure how having to build 15 miles of elevated highway through an area that'll be remote and difficult to access for construction equipment would be a lot cheaper than a new bridge in Plaquemine

Anyone over 40 will never see the new bridge in their remaining life.

National Environmental Policy Act
Everyone bitching about how long it takes to build a bridge - it is your federal government and liberal policies that won't go away - because tree frogs, or spotted owls or trees.
Since the 70s every delayed project has been because of this and the Corps of Engineers. Period Full Stop.

You expected this to be accelerated by the governor of Lafayette? He doesn’t give a shite about the Baton Rouge region.

This would make sense if this endeavor was actually about building a bridge to alleviate congestion.
It's not.
Many more studies must be done to determine the best possible redistribution of taxpayer money errr I mean path forward.
Look I don't know how old most of yo are but they have been talking about this since the mid to late 80's. It isn't happening but they will keep paying for engineering studies to prove they're on top of it.

Going to have to tie the bridge in to the interstate or it won't make a major impact on BR traffic. Make la 1 a limited access highway down to the sunshine bridge then build a highway to the interstate

Because most of the traffic crossing the I-10 bridge (especially during periods of congestion) is local commuter traffic. And most of the non-commuter traffic is connecting with I-12 rather than I-10 on the east side of BR.
In other words, a bypass to the Sunshine Bridge would not do much to alleviate congestion on the I-10 bridge. You’re probably also underestimating the cost of building 30-40 miles of interstate through swamp land.

It hasn’t happened because it’s never been funded. Every time a proposal has come up for funding, it’s been killed by a combination of NIMBY’s, special interests, and lack of available money. The legislature has, in the past, justified kicking the can by saying DOTD needed to have a more complete plan first.
This time around DOTD has taken a different approach - evaluating multiple locations and (ideally) coming up with a semi-final design that has been vetted by everyone before asking for the money. It’s drawn the process out but is probably the only way that it gets funded for real.
That being said, it’s still not fully funded so it may die on the vine again. But if so it’ll be the same reason it’s always been - because the state can’t find the funding.

Prediction: they are trying to justify canceling the whole thing because they want to spend the money somewhere else.
I hate Landry but if he can actually get some dirt moving on this….I will consider him a decent governor.

But if it is ever built, let’s pray it’ll have the requisite pvc pipe proudly displayed as part of its drainage.
