We need to live in the moment more often

As I wrap up a little trip, I’m reminded of how awesome the open road can be. There’s something to be said for miles and miles of nothing, stepping out at a picnic area and breathing the fresh air, hiking in a national park, and disconnecting with the negativity surrounding us.
I actually feel bad when I see a family enjoying the scenery and the kids have headphones on and are staring at their phones while they walk. This country can be a beautiful place if we open our eyes a bit.

America’s National Parks Set a Visitation Record in 2024
Sites operated by the National Park Service recorded more than 331 million visits last year—the most in history. The news comes as the NPS weathers its worst staffing crisis in years.

I frequently visit the national parks, and crowds are definitely up. Glad to see so many fellow Americans enjoying the outdoors.

That’s a shallow existence but one that many people embrace. For most they will find out too late that eternity is a much longer time than these 70 to 80 years.
Most will lost all those cherished memories before they even die.

Did you put your dick in the hole in the bathroom stall there at the picnic area?

What do you think living in the moment means? Not sure that you and the OP are talking about the same concept.

This makes no sense whatsoever

You said it. I walked the neighborhood with a guy who was quite loquacious. He hurt his knee and hid to take a break for a few months. During the quiet walks alone I realized how much I missed the silence that I now enjoyed.

It’s one of the fundamentals of Buddhism. I try my best to live in the moment, but it’s hard since humans by default constantly think and put priority about the future.

This kind of shite saddens me.
People are more worried about posting video clout on social media rather than actually experiencing the moment.

One of my biggest regrets was trying to take pictures and video a total solar eclipse in Nashville, TN in 2017 that I completely felt like I missed the moment and could hardly describe what I saw. I made a point to not do that again for the one in 2024 when I went to Pocahontas, AR and it was truly much more surreal.
I have the same problem with people sometimes too. I regret not being more present in real-time conversations with some of my friends, but I'm working on that now.

It's so annoying road tripping with people that are oblivious to what they could be seeing. Instead they fill the air with talk of drama and other unnecessary chatter.

It doesn't even have to be a trip.
This time of year, I sit on my porch at dusk and watch the fire flies for about an hour every day with a cocktail. All the stress of the day just melts away.

As the National Parks are filling with people who have bucket lists to check off, I'll recommend State Parks and Forest Area campgrounds. State Parks especially for history about to be forgotten.
Now about getting there. We did a short trip earlier this week and were shocked at how overgrown I-40 has become between Knoxville and Nashville. Where we used to see farms, quarries, and magnificent vistas, now it;s trees, lots and lots of dense deciduous trees. (I have the same feeling on I-95 south of Fredericksburg Va. The alternative is the US highway system which seems to have a lot less traffic and a lot fewer 18 wheelers. And a lot more to see.

I'm retiring in 3 years and want to spend at least the first year doing this.
