The problem is, Trump's current foreign policy is not helpful for lowering the price of oil. With that said there is ample domestic supply so that should mitigate any short term supply chain issues in the ME for the U.S.

Iran says they are blockading the Strait of Hormuz which is the entrance to the Persian Gulf - effectively cutting off one fifth (correction) of the global oil supply.

That's probably more accurate - its 20m barrels a day export from gulf vs 100m global consumption.
Still - that will hurt. I think domestically the SPR is at half capacity.

Except none of it goes to the western world. Zilch. Iran not exporting their oil should not affect us one way or the other. Which is what Trump is getting at.
However, shutting down the Straights of Hormuz is a whole other matter and does affect us greatly.
Can they shut down the straights? For about 6 hrs. and then the Carl Vinson and Nimitz CSGs will change that. They are actively GPS jamming/spoofing in the straights now which qualifies only as a "hinderance" and safety issue, not on the level of military action. But if the add on to the spoofing to use it as a disguise for other actions then we are in "threat to high seas" territory.
