Son is about graduate. How does he contact recuiters and what do you think is starting salary?

Did he do internships during undergrad? Is he using the resources provided by his university?

As in this summer? Fall? Next spring?

Which school?

Usually the schools have a ton of resources and career fairs and interview process. They also have direct connections if some of those fail.

When I graduated I leveraged these resources very heavily. I probably had 20+ interviews during that week/month and a ton of offers or follow-ups. It was by far the best method to get in touch with recruiters.

These fairs are typically in the fall, with target hiring for the next spring/summer.

Alternatively, LinkedIn is very solid for recruiting and making connections and finding jobs. This is typically for experienced hires, but I’d imagine there’s some “new hire” recruitment as well.

Starting salary can be a vast range depending on industry and location. An ME in the O&G market in South LA will be vastly different than an ME in the HVAC industry in Nebraska.

LA Tech is the school. I don't think he did an internship unless it was called a senior project.

Your son needs to figure out how to handle this himself as step 1 to a successful career.

Eta: not being a smartass at all here. Serious advice. Time to grow up, right now.

Job market is not good for engineers right now from what I understand.

From what I have seen is that defense contractors have completely stopped hiring with the uncertainty in what direction in the administration is going. The defense industry was a large portion of the high paying engineering jobs, especially Mech Eng

Look into substation design firms. Physical engineering is in demand for MEs and EEs

My son is doing well in East Camden defense industry, and he’s a Tech grad, so definitely look there.

dont contact recruiters. Just go to the job fairs on campus. Tell him not to discuss salary during an interview. You discuss that after the offer has been made.

Should be plenty of ME offerings out there. We just hired a batch in my office (MEs and Construction management). Had to take the new hires on a "field Trip" last week to show them a completed project we did. one of the hires was a Tech grad.

Just start searching for companies and hit their websites. Company i work for takes applications online, lots of others as well. Need to saturate the market with his resumes, and hope for a few hits.

statistically speaking, he first job will be a resume builder. this is why internships are so important while in college. you break the ice before graduating and can separate yourself when applying after graduation.

EDIT: and we currently have plenty of need to hire more. we are expanding. just my office has increased x4 in past 2.5 years since i moved into this division.

Pretty good engineering program from what I understand.

Yikes.

There's certainly a market for him as a mechanical engineer, but I'm not sure I know many engineers 40 or younger who didn't intern or work somewhere for their field at least one summer before graduating. If LA Tech didn't instill on him and have some support to help him intern somewhere, if even just 8 weeks, before graduating, that's very concerning.

RPCC has this. Im quite sure LA Tech has a very robust careers department.

Ill continue being a bit of a dick to OP here - your kid sounds unmotivated. Not saying this is right, but the extent of career conversations I had with my parents while in engineering school was me bitching about school and how much it costs. The resources for students are plentiful, the school wants you to get hired and wants you to get rich year one, because it reflects on the college and they recruit with that data.

If the kid is graduating in a few weeks and doesnt even know if he worked an internship or not, thats on him and its laziness and ineptitude. Don't worry, all is not lost. Engage the schools career department now - they will have leftover leads. Start sending resumes out everywhere. Make an account and upload a resume on every companies website. Go drop off resumes.

If he isnt working a real job right now he needs to be hustling his arse to find one. A LA tech engineering degree is enough to get a good job. Might not be exactly what he wants, and it isnt likely to fall into his lap, but it'll pay the bills and build the resume.

Youre doing him a disservice by helping him here. Its the last time in his life he can frick up and not lose his house over it. Hes not going to be good at his job if he cant get off his arse and go find a job himself.

- sorry for the rant. I interview college kids sometimes. Passionate subject for me.

Right? Back in my day we just posted on TD ourselves asking our fellow students what they were doing

They push the shite out of it almost to the point of shaming students that don’t intern. There are two career fairs every school year plus guest speakers and other opportunities to talk to employers. If you didn’t intern, it’s on you

Little surprising that he wasnt instructed on the value of an internship. Mainly for him to learn real world stuff so he knows what he may like to do. My daughter graduated from Tech and I know her advisor was very proactive and helpful guiding her.

Exactly. Techs Career Fair is one of the best I’ve seen in the state. I saw it on the student side and at 3 different companies in the hiring process.

Some suggestions as my son was in a similar position a few yrs ago after graduating from NCSU in Raleigh.
- Use his friends & contacts from college, guys/gals who graduated before him, and where are they now? This is how my son landed his job in 2022 (started at $76K with outstanding benefits, bonuses, raises, etc).
- Any recs from his professors & advisors
- Contacts from any internships he completed.
- Research the area you desire, look up ENG companies in that area, and see what they have available.
- Job sites like Indeed and others can also be helpful.
- USA jobs is a good site for Federal ENG positions all over the country. Some locations, due to their need for Engineers, have been able to waive the federal hiring freeze.

Good luck to him!
