I Refused To Help a Sr Manager from Another Department

We are in quarterly forecasts at my company, and while I used to be in the Finance department, I have switched to Supply Chain and Operations. Our Sr Finance Manager just retired (she was unbelievable, but she burnt out), and they have promoted someone who is far less capable (but very conforming). This newly promoted employee has 10 years in the company, and makes as much as the Sr Manager, despite lacking several qualifications/experienced. I was in charge of forecasts/budgets/FP&A, etc, and can do those without any issue.
I am in a completely different department (same level), and the newly promoted Sr Manager has suggested to the CFO that I should be asked to assist with this project. I refused because a) It's no longer my job, and I am in another department, b) a Sr Manager should be able to figure out the project without assistance from another department. CFO is very upset that I refused to assist and says that my expectations for this new Sr Manager is unreasonable. I do not mind helping out once in a while; however, I have much higher expectations for those in a Sr Manager role. I have never asked for assistance from another department at this level.
Am I being unreasonable?

Yes.
You sound like someone I wouldn't promote into a leadership position.
No offense, you asked.

You seem bitter. Why so bitter? You're being critical of someone trying to find their footing in a new position while pulling the "that's not my job" card. You were pretty much a jerk here.

Polish up that resume.

Sounds like you need to unleash more seamless synergy and help build alignment

So what is the problem?

No but also you've might've tanked your chances at promotion if that is what you want.
Like another poster mentioned here, once you've been tagged as "someone who can get shite done" they will continue to pile shite on your plate while people who are incredibly incompetent get a free pass.

Why are you not a "team player"?
And by "team player" I mean the sooner you show the new senior manager what you know, the sooner they can get rid of you now that their new pet has your knowledge!!

That's Not My Job! is fast pass to the shite list if it's me making the decision.

You can’t help em out just once?

Short answer: No.
If the Finance manager has been there for 10 years then they should be able to figure out or ask someone in their chain of command for assistance. The CFO will get over it. The CFO should have considered this when hiring for the position.

Why doesn't CFO help the Sr. Manager?
Posted on 6/20/25 at 9:07 am to littleavery1948
If you get a paycheck, you do what your boss wants. Plain and simple. Explaining to your CFO your position is fine, but what he says goes.

Yes, especially if this is their first time handling this project.
Now if you help and they ask again, different story. They would understand leadership expectations and what was required to complete the project at that point.

Are you a woman? This sounds like some petty shite a woman would do

“man, I really want to help you out, but go ahead and get with my boss as I think he has me on another project right now, I think my boss would have to approve this. Hope it works out!”

If I'm asked to do something at work that I don't want to, I ask myself "is it worth finding another job over this?" If it was too much bullshite, I'd consider quitting, but it isn't usually, and I do what is required.

Thankfully, almost every professional job I ever worked in, had Sr. level employees that were happy to step in and help me when I was new. Even though it wasn't their job any longer.
And I've tried to pass that on down the line. Whenever a new person asks me for help, I remember when I first started with the company, and how much I appreciated the assist until I figured it all out.
Just my opinion, but you don't seem like a very good co-worker. But you do you.

I agree with the CFO. A newly promoted person who’s experienced superior is no longer there isn’t supposed to know everything. You could have bought equity by helping out, but now you just look like an a-hole with no leadership skills. Good job
