How much of your non essentials spending is influenced by the Joneses?

A. None
B. Some
C. A lot
JONESES INFLUENCE:
Your friend buys a boat.
Your neighbor takes a nice trip.
Your relative lives in that big, nice house.
Your drinking buddy steps up their bourbon of choice.
NO JONESES
You may or may not be able to afford all the above JONESES, yet you do what you do.
For example:
Income - savings/investments = expenses
(You put your financial health as high priority)
You take non essential purchase decisions by this or similar way of thinking.

My life does not resemble any of my friends or family in any form or fashion. But looking from the outside in, I would say at least 50% of my friends are influenced by those around them and 25% of my family.

A.
My household nonessential spending comes from wife having the amazon app on her phone and too much free time.

This is the money board. The overwhelming majority here don’t give a shite about that if I had to guess.

A. None
Although, it's actually just close to and approaching zero. I like to think none but realize we are all to some degree susceptible to social and commercial influences.
My math is more like
Income - investments - expenses - discretionary spending (frugal/reasonable)= additional investing
When my checking balance exceeds approx an additional month or so of expenses I invest it.
At this point, we need to work on spending more but only things that would really move the needle enjoyment wise at this point are large expenditures like home improvements and finding it hard to get motivated to research, find contractor and disrupt our routine.

None. We can afford whatever we want but choose to be disciplined for longer term goals. At the same time, we don’t worry about money if we spend more in a month because we need something.

We live within our means and weigh purchases of big things (boats, trips, new home, etc) on how much actual utility we would get from it versus how much it costs (including maintaining, insurance, etc. like with a pool or RV).
Whether our neighbors, friends, etc. have or are doing something is irrelevant to us (beyond being happy for them if they can afford it or shaking our heads if they can't).

0% mine
One of my good fiends spent the last 20 years showing out, buying boats, Range Rovers, sending their kids to private school.
He had an unexpected job interruption and within 3 months the whole house of cards fell to pieces.
They are now divorced and he lives in a trailer.

I don't care what other people do. I avoid depreciating assets. Its that simple.

Zero.
I drive a nearly 15 year old vehicle that most people would have replaced long ago. And I’ll drive it another few years if it holds up.
Don’t get me wrong. I do splurge on some things I enjoy, but how it looks to other people never crosses my mind.

A. None because i am the Jones
Not really, there is a little truth in that, but there are just some areas that i like to spend money in and when i do buy nice things i tend to by a REALLY nice version, but i also love to look for a deal when i do buy something. The Home is the easiest thing you overcook to put yourself in a bad spot and luckily we live in a relatively low cost of living place and got in early.
Disclaimer: My wife keeps our spending in check as she is thrifty, i would be significantly poorer without her

A. Sometimes I feel like maybe there's something wrong with me because I don't want to spend $ on cars, toys, gadgets but the Joneses of the world can't get enough of em... I just get 0 satisfaction, enjoyment, dopamine, or whatever you want to call it from things.

IDGAF what my peer circle or relatives spend on stuff, rather that their happy.
Somebody will ALWAYS have more or newer stuff or experiences, bad rabbit hole to be concerned with.

None. We make great money, but live below our means. The only splurging I do is for the kids.
Posted on 6/18/25 at 11:28 am to Artificial Ignorance
I guess B, if you consider 0% of my money is spent that way, but 90% of the child support I send is being spent with the Joneses in mind. And sometimes the Joneses just live in people's heads, not on the same block.

Your thread is dumb because everyone is going to respond the exact same way.
Who is going to respond and say they buy shite to impress their neighbors?
