Towable camper owners.... Not the OT millionaire glampers

Honestly, how often do you use your camper?
How far do you normally pull your camper for vacation?
I notice weird things like the fact that most people that have campers in their yards, they hardly ever move them.
We have been considering purchasing a camper, possibly a pop-up since they are so easy to tow but I'm not convinced that we'd use it enough or that it'd be big enough.

Same for boats, most people buy them and they rot in the driveway or in storage.

Like anything else when you first buy it you use it all the time, then it becomes a yard decoration, or you blow money at a storage facility

Happiest days of camper buyers are the day the buy it and the day the sell it.

We have owned a popup, motor home and pull camper. Motornhome was for ball tournaments, does not work well for camping. We never used any enough to be worth the expense, though it was fun times.
Make the commitment to be a camper for vacations and long weekends and then worth it. Or buy a cheaper popup, all we did was sleep in them anyway.

With as many as I see on the roads on weekends they must be getting used.
I dont get it. Leave your house to go live in a glorified trailer park for a few days???

I have a neighbor with one and it moves once a year

We're using ours more now that I'm retired. We just did about 3 1/2 weeks in West Texas Hill Country. And last year, we did 3 weeks in north Arkansas. We'll take some smaller trips pending weather. Right now, it storms every day and we camp less when it stays in the 90's. If you live in south Louisiana, you know what I mean. We have a small hard shell camper because some state and national parks won't allow pop up campers because of bears. So that's something to think about if you want to travel the country. We spend 95% of our time outside when camping so that's why we have a small camper. Best advice is look at all types and floor plans to find the one that works for you. Do your research because there are a lot of options out there and it can get confusing. Slide outs are nice but it's more maintenance and something else to break.

My dad used his 20 weekends a year for 8 years straight
Now, he was a competitive sheet shooter that traveled the country so he had a definite plan for using it
If you don’t have a plan (national parks, lsu games, etc) I bet it goes to waste

Converted horse trailer to toy hauler. TBH last trip was 2018. Going to try and hit the mountain trails again this year with our Lake Chuck riding baw.

10 years ago, I bought a used 32' Mallard.
It needed a ton of work on the interior, so I gutted it and replaced all of the wood and paneling with new materials, along with new light and plumbing fixtures.
Planned to take it on a 4th of July trip but I listed it for sale in May to see if there would be any interest.
Sold it 2 days after listing it for $3500 more than I paid for it.
Never spent a night in it.

FIL/MIL are in their upper 80's and don't use their 24' Mallard any longer. Told us to use it as we wanted. Probably gone on a handful of camping trips and was really considering purchasing one. Now that the initial desire has subsided, I'm glad I didn't. As has been stated, would probably be more yard art than utilized for camping.

Seems like you’ve already been through this?
This is one of those things where unless you already have an idea of how you’re gonna use it, you probably aren’t gonna. Everyone I know who uses a camper has a group of friends or family that goes regularly, somewhat close to home, and it just gives them all a place to hang out that isn’t someone’s house.

I'm going to buy a Class C RV but not until 2-3 years before I retire. I don't have time now to use it like I would like.

We had a popup for a while. The rest of the family loved it, but I was the one who had to set it up, deal with the gray water tank, clean it when we got back, and fix all the shite that broke. I liked it otherwise, but in reality it was more a weekend of work for me than a vacation.

We have one that’s 20 foot that we use personally probably 3/4 times a year. But we rent it out throughout the spring summer and fall so we are able to get a little ROI. Able to bring in about an extra thousand per month when we’re renting it.

Everyone i know with a camper used it a lot the first year then maybe one time a year after.
I want a motorhome but I'm sure I'll never use it

This is true. When our kids were younger, we had a group that would all go together. I just used my parents camper though and never had to buy one. We went 4-6 times a year. Great times were had, some of our best memories during that time.
Kids are in college now. I built a teardrop during covid for me and the wife (no pics) to camp out west. We have done 2 month long trips in it and a few shorter trips. We don't us it often, but never intended to.
