Can someone explain why this is even a thing?

It may be the most disingenuous stat in sports.

It is what it is.

Obviously, it's not the best stat to evaluate effectiveness.

Too many people think absolutely. If it's not everything, it's nothing.

Because they've been counting them for 100 years and it's not going to change just because Skenes doesn't have as many wins as you want him to.

Pitchers used to routinely throw complete games, so seeing who did enough to win the game was at least worth tracking

it has become less relevant the less pitchers throw.

As others pointed out, with changes in the game, this stat has lost a lot of its value.

I remember when MLB quit keeping up with "Game winning RBI" as a stat in the 80's. One year you had to keep up with it. The next year, it was gone.

ETA: The birth, life and death of the Game-Winning RBI onSABR.org

quote:

In 1980, the Elias Sports Bureau – baseball’s statistical keepers – quietly introduced a new statistic into the sport’s vernacular: the game-winning RBI. The introduction was so quiet, in fact, that I can’t find a single article mentioning the new statistic in 1980. Instead, it just suddenly appeared in box scores that spring, innocently tracking players’ ability to hit in the clutch. Or so Elias hoped. ...

We count wins in every sport because that’s the point of the game.

There are great players in every sport that didn’t get their fair share of wins because they played on bad teams. We still recognize their greatness.

I really wish it would just be up to the scorers discretion who the most effective pitcher is/most responsible for the loss to get the W and L. Probably wouldn’t change a ton but the arbitrary requirements are stupid to me.

# of QS is a better pitching stat

A pitchers record depends on how good his team is

QS is not a good stat because its built off an arbitrary amount of ER and those are heavily influenced by ball park factors, defense, and positioning

FIP has been proven to be the best indicator of true talent and best predictor of future performance

It’s better than wins.

Although it’s a combination of pitching stats will give the full picture.

Wins
Bubic (5)
Eovaldi (4)
Skenes (4)

QS
Bubic (9)
Eovaldi (8)
Skenes (11)
