Which studio would you prefer?

quote:

EXCLUSIVE: Talks for who’ll wind up with the much-prized Texas Chainsaw Massacre IP are beginning Monday as anywhere from five to eight studios and/or streamers are vying for rights of the Tobe Hooper- and Kim Henkel-created property that encompasses film, TV, live events and games.

We first told you about this beauty contest, administered by Verve, the agency having repped rights to the slasher franchise since 2017. Exurbia Films is the primary production company behind Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel and Kim Henkel as producers. The property is repped by attorney Marios Rush.

There are no clear frontrunners in the bidding, however, new creative parties have emerged with a passion for the project. Myriad notable creative entities have teamed with studios to pitch Verve and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre rightsholders on their vision for notorious killer Leatherface, who uses his chainsaw to go on a cannibalistic killing spree.

Its all the same. It'll be poisoned with "modern audiences" social commentary and other fun DEI nuggets.

There's no freedom to pursue excellence or quality.

Perkins and Neon would be my ideal choice. Powell/A24 in a close second.

I don’t want Netflix or Paramount.

I’d bet on a rodeo, horses and TS cameo if it happens.

Honestly I enjoyed the Netflix 2022 version. The van in the sunflower field was well done and the bus chainsaw scene, c’mon, sawed bloggers in half!

But yeah I get not wanting Netflix to win the bid.

Powell and Sheridan are at least from Texas, so I feel like they’d probably do the most authentic job with it.

The two richest entities.

The original is okay but I don't have any particular affection for it. Netflix will get it if they really really want to. That's probably not good considering their track record. I'm sure Jordan Peele wants it for similar reasons.

How about none. This is one of the most run into the ground franchises out there. I don't know how there's so many movies based on this. What more can you do with it?

TCM is the best horror movie ever.

TCM is the one horror movie that doesn't work well with a franchise. Typically people use Hellraiser as the example, but Hellraiser 2 was good. TCM 2 being a satire that intentionally made no sense was as much as they had to squeeze out of that IP

You just can't recreate the grittiness of the original and it makes the original so powerful. The low budget, bad film stock, non-actors, etc. all works in a package.

Remaking it with modern skill/tech just doesn't work. Other people have done their own homages to TCM that surpass any sequel of TCM. Leatherface isn't a slasher icon. He's a retarded weakling who is bullied by his family who freaks out when people come on his property and kills them.

Has Taylor Sheridan done anything with the horror genre?

It’s truly a perfect 10/10 movie, lightning in a bottle. Despite all of the sequels nothing will ever come close.

If they really wanted to do something, make it super low budget / guerrilla filmmaking with a talented director and film it in Austin Texas heat.

I think the 2003 remake is underrated. Nowhere near the original, but a solid horror flick.
