Seems like the book is out on him now. Just sit on the changeup. Wonder if Jay will trust him in any high leverage situations moving forward?

Definitely can be used again but he is a 1 inning guy.

Hopefully he comes back and adds some velo and another out pitch. That change up is absolutely filthy. He just relies on it too much.

I don’t think that’s it. The guy pitched way more innings last season and was effective. I think the problem is his loss of control. This is what is allowing hitters to sit on the change.

Hitters sit on the change and poke the fastball opposite field. His location has to be perfect.

he may be a 1 hitter pitcher.

Every single outing he has struggled over the last month.

Why Jay thought it would chance yesterday IDK. It damn near cost us the game.

He’s a strike thrower which is needed in this LSU bullpen. I think you just can’t let a team see him for a second at bat.

Yep. Little Rock's coach talked about it postgame. Said Cowan just left his location up a bit. Said he's very effective when he can keep his pitches down in the zone.

Exactly. It’s not as simple as just saying people are sitting on his best pitch. He’s not throwing with enough command to set up his changeup and he isn’t throwing the changeup where it needs to be so it’s effective.

Going forward Cowan needs to be a one inning set up guy.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that

He isn’t locating his change up. It’s not dropping down and out of the zone. Makes it a more hittable pitch.

He doesn't need to add velo with that chang up. Problem is he throws it too damn much. He needs to add a slider to his repertoire

That wasn’t the issue last night. The hits were manageable. It was the walks that killed him and that’s a completely new issue. He’s never given up that many in close succession and has been third best in the staff in Strike to Ball Ratio. He had several non-competitive pitches, and that’s not something he’s done often in the past. Definitely not as often as others in the pen who have been less consistent.

His location was hit and miss, but there were a few batters where you saw that changeup drop down and get them, especially in the first. But once he lost it, it wasn’t much different than Shores on Sunday.

He just needs to get his mind and mechanics right, but unfortunately it’s hard to give him time to do it with the stakes what they are now. He may need to be used judiciously until next season, we he will hopefully have this worked out.

What's unfortunate is that we don't have enough reliable arms in the bullpen to not use him again, especially if LSU makes it to Omaha and makes a run.

He’s a guy with a lot of experience, has done really really really well for most of the year, and has played in big post season games. It’s extremely obvious why he would start him to anyone even barely paying attention.

Hitters are sitting on the changeup because he doesn’t/won’t throw the fastball over the plate.

He has to challenge in. And he has to throw the changeup less.

The first pitch changeup is a mistake.
