A federal immigration judge in Phoenix denied asylum to a woman after finding she had credible fears that she would be killed by a drug cartel if she returns to Mexico.

The woman and her five children are seeking asylum protections in the U.S. after she received death threats from a cartel active in Mexico, according to a summary of proceedings recited by Judge John Cortes.

Cortes said he found the woman’s testimony credible after she told the court she had been in an abusive relationship with a “sicario,” a cartel hitman. She also said the cartel employed other members of her family.

According to Cortes, the woman fled her home in Mexico after the same cartel threatened her life if she did not repay money her partner owed the criminal organization.

But Cortes denied the woman’s asylum claim, citing federal law that denies asylum protections to people who have provided “material support” to terrorist organizations or terrorist activity.

She was fleeing the cartel, but couldn’t flee to SOME OTHER DISCREET LOCATION in a country that is 761,000 square miles?

You HAVE to go to another country to get away? Nah.

I mean, I'm sorry for this woman's situation and more so for her children. But the judge clearly explained what "asylum" actually means and domestic violence and/or living in a cartel-infested country don't qualify.

quote:

The judge cited a law stating that asylum seekers must establish that they were persecuted due to “race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.”

Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras are going to have to fix their cartel problems like El Salvador did. Just letting everyone run north is not a solution.

Can she not seek asylum in another country? How about Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, etc. Why are we the only ones they run to?

She helps the cartel, then steals money from them, and now she wants to use the fact that the cartel wants to kill her to claim asylum… Talk about chutzpah.

Sounds more like immigration judge denies welfare from the American tax payer.

I'm okay with this. Let her own country take care of her.

How does someone that claims this prove it without the help of a progressive judge?

The NGOs have told these people, coached even, about what to say.
Anyone with the the intent to do harm here knows exactly what to say and thanks to them dems they are wildly successful.

Who gives a shat if she has five kids??? We have thrown NBA players in jail and no one uses their 27 kids as an argument.

Every illegal is "threatened" by the cartel now. Prove it.....to a judge in mejico.

Even assuming she's granted asylum, this woman is still dead if she stays in Arizona. The cartel has serious infrastructure there.

The NGOs definitely do coach them on exactly what to say, but it’s still largely unsuccessful as most do not have any legit basis for an asylum claim. Most are economic migrants, many are coming from very violent places, but they aren’t being targeted for any specific identity.

quote:

According to its latest annual report, the Executive Office for Immigration Review examined 88,580 possible asylum claims from Mexicans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans and Hondurans in fiscal year 2022. The approval rate for Mexicans was 4 percent, while only 8 percent of Guatemalans and Hondurans whose cases came up for review that year secured a positive outcome. The grant rate for Salvadorans was 9 percent.

The Biden admin and NGOs knew they didn’t really qualify for asylum, but they let them all in with a wink and a promise to appear a few years later for their asylum hearing. It was a numbers and waiting game.

I’m not trying to be cavalier, but we aren’t contractually obligated to give goodies to the children of everyone who lives in a 3rd world shithole.

If you disagree with that and have not donated any sort of money to international relief efforts, then you’re just a hypocrite who wants to assuage your guilt with my money.
