16 year old chihuahua had a stroke and having to euthanize him today. Been reading stories on here of others in same situation lately and dreading this day. He isn’t suffering so we are waiting till both my sons can drive home to say goodbye. With pain we are all feeling not sure if we will get another one and no way it would ever measure up. But with both boys gone from home I know my wife will be lonely ?? give extra hugs and treats to the furry friend beside you today. Mine had chicken nugget happy meal last night ??

I’m sorry. This is never easy.
You and your wife will know when and if it’s time for another. I know people who got new dogs immediately, and others (like me) who needed more time.
It’s hard to explain, but if you get a new pup, you’ll love the new one just as much but it won’t replace the love you still have for your boy. I doubted it, but the heart is funny like that.
For me, it’s the confirmation that yes losing a pet is hard, but you can love another just as much again if you so choose.

Sorry man. Just take solace in the fact he had a good life and he lived a long time.
I just took my 12-year-old good girl in for a wellness check. Doc said she’s doing great and could live another 4 or 5 years.

I’m so sorry, been there many times. The end is so painful for us, but I once read grief is love turned inward. 16 years, you did something right. If you ever adopt another, no another won’t take his place. It will make a new spot. When you are ready, maybe you can adopt in his honor to save a life. Greta’s Ark in Bogalusa always has chi and other small dogs. This may sound silly to some, but I believe we are reunited one day. God loves all of His creatures.

You buy a dog hoping you outlive it. You did, congrats. Get another one.

He might recover. I had one who looked like she was finished and she made a full recovery.

We lost our 11 year old chi to liver cancer about 2 years ago. We bought a baby chi right at the end for her and kinda let her pass on the torch. It really comforts me that they got to meet.

Had to put our 20 year old chihuahua down about a year ago that little mofo was like our child and was raised with all my three now grownup kids. I put it off a few times and made a u-turn at the vets. I knew it was time when I looked out in the yard one day and he was ticking and he was disoriented. I shed tears driving to the vet and as he slipped away and crossed the rainbow bridge. My daughter was there too and even though she didn’t want to be there she later told me she was glad she went. Sorry it is never easy but just remember you gave him a great life.

Sorry for your loss.
I buried both my dogs within a year of each other in 2021 and 2022. They were a black Lab (boy) and a Cairn Terrier (girl). Couldn’t have been more different in every way but they grew up together like brother and sister. Both were 12 when they passed.
They’re in my back yard. Not ashamed to say I cried with every push of that shovel.

I buried my 14 year old Boston last month. He hadn't been doing well for a couple of months. Went to the Vet, twice. He had a growth in his chest that was going to eventually get him.
Morning of he didn't look good, but went outside. Wife called at lunch said she was going home to check on him. He died in her arms.
I buried him in the yard with his favorite blankets.
I miss him everyday.

“Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion.
There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.” – Dean Koontz

Sorry for y'all loss. It sucks, no other way to say it.
Even for the "just pets" people it's still a living being that you had affection for and interacted with DAILY for YEARS.
We had to put our dog down last week, also right at 16 years. He was suffering from a brain tumor & doggy dementia. The tumor made his decline very sharp, with drastic changes & decline in the last 3 weeks. It's been several days but I still find myself going to call his name when I don't immediately see him when I walk in the room, still go to check his water & food bowls to see if he's got enough, and still go to call his name when I drop a crumb or floor or just instinctively break off a piece to share with him.

The only problem with dogs is that they don't last long enough.
Remember your buddy well as you send him back to his maker.
