Shoppers have fled Temu and Shein after President Trump slapped the Chinese sites with hefty tariffs – spending their dollars instead at US department stores like Nordstrom Rack and Kohl’s, according to data exclusively shared with The Post. Temu saw its spending growth among US customers plummet in April, slowing from nearly 50% year-over-year growth at the start of the month to nearly 0% at the end, according to credit and debit card data analyzed by Consumer Edge. Shein also suffered a steep decline in US spending growth, cooling from 30% at the start of April to just 20% at the end.

In the three weeks ended April 27, former Temu and Shein shoppers spent 21% more at Nordstrom Rack than the year before, according to Consumer Edge. That’s more than the 12% overall spend growth at Nordstrom Rack.

Former Temu and Shein shoppers – who made multiple purchases at the Chinese sites earlier in the year but none in March or April – brought their business to Bloomingdale’s, Old Navy and Kohl’s over the same three weeks, according to Consumer Edge.

They spent 52%, 12% and 6% more at these retailers than the year before, outpacing overall spending growth from all customers, according to the data.

I'm making an assumption here, but maybe someone knows if my assumption is correct:

TEMU was created, primarily, as a way for the Chinese to dump planned/intentional overproduction (in violation of previous agreements)?

I'd love if malls came back as an unintended consequence.

The uproar about tariffs was that the American people would be able to afford less. I couldn’t care less about online Temu or Shein prices.

And I agree that sending folks to Department stores is great, but not if everything costs too much.

So what’s the situation at Walmart?
Are the people who shop there able to afford the same clothes or toys for their kids?

Do you mean you do not like shopping at clearance stores in giant underutilized indoor space and having good boys doing nothing wrong harassing you when you shop?

I don’t even understand why shoppers like Temu. Out of 10 items one might be decent quality and a good deal and the other 9 are crap that breaks within a couple weeks. Yea it’s cheap but it’s largely useless crap. I tried out a socket set and pocket knife from Temu and it made harbor freight tools look like snap-on

I know you were just using hyperbole, but Harbor Freight is similar to Sears Craftsman now.

No women should be putting that crap anywhere near their vaginas. Plastic is determinantal to vaginal health.

What I said was the tariffs would crush ordinary people’s expenses and their 401ks. And the market showed it very quickly.

So now that the original tariffs are reversed, there is more optimism in the market.

So what really happened is the market slapped some sense into the admin to change the original tariff rollout. Something more strategic makes more sense.

The MSM conveniently forgot about this but yes, technically you are correct.

quote:

Temu is officially incorporated in Delaware and headquartered in Boston, although it is owned by the global commerce group PDD Holdings, which was founded by 43-year-old Chinese billionaire Colin Huang. It is the sister site to domestic e-commerce platform Pinduoduo and their joint parent, PDD Holdings, was founded in 2015 and relocated its headquarters to Dublin, Ireland in 2023.

At the end of 2022, PDD Holding's market capitalization surpassed fellow Chinese giant Alibaba’s to make PDD the most valuable U.S.-listed Chinese company. That reportedly made Huang the second-richest man in China.

Colin reportedly took a $14 billion+ hit in a day during these tariffs. Capitalists are sick and tired of Chinese companies taking our IP and selling it as cheaply made shite on the secondary market. You're just not going to get to do it profitably while DJT is in the White House. Go peddle your Adult Five Below bullshite in Western Europe or Australia.
