Former LA Gov. John Bel Edwards considers run for U.S. Senate, report says

BATON ROUGE, La. (KNOE) - According to the New York Times, former Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards (D) called and met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer about a potential run for Senate against current Senator Bill Cassidy (R).
The party primary is April 18, 2026. The general election is in November 2026.
Edwards reportedly told Schumer to follow up in August, keeping his intentions vague.
Political analyst Jim Engster says Edwards has a built-in advantage, having already been elected governor twice.
“The Democrats have to find somebody if they want to make a reasonable race, and he’s their best bet,” Engster says.
Engster adds that Cassidy is running for re-election, but his vote to impeach Trump came with some backlash from his fellow Republicans, which could shake things up.
State Treasurer John Fleming (R) also plans to run for the seat.
“If Bill Cassidy does survive, he’ll be wounded. And if he doesn’t survive, that means a Republican will be running who will also presumably be wounded,” Engster says. “So, John Bel Edwards would be a fresh Democrat with a reasonable shot. May not be the best shot, but it’s the best shot that the Democrats have in trying to get that seat back, which they haven’t had now since 2014.”
Engster says two other elected officials, Congresswoman Julia Letlow and State Senator Blake Miguez (both Republicans), could be other names we see in this race.

I don’t think any Democrat has a shot in this race unless voter fraud or cheating takes place for Dems

Cassidy or JBE, what a shite choice.
Reminds of the shite choices back in the old days: Edwin Edwards or Cleo Fields, Edwin Edwards or David Duke.

Edwards and Cleo Fields never faced each other; they were on the same side of the fence and thick as thieves (literally).
Fields faced Mike Foster for the governorship. And that was an easy choice.

I will not vote for Cassidy.

Fields hung around for so long I had it in my mind that he was in several governor races but you’re correct, it’s coming back to me now.

I think JBE has a great chance of beating Cassidy for obvious reasons.

Did you say the same thing when he ran for Governor and won twice?

Jungle primary is a feature for Dems, as they will put up JBE and no one else. Flemming and Cassidy will destroy each other while JBE gets to stay out of having any real policy positions and hold on to his money..

Since Louisiana will have a closed primary system in 2026 things should be different.
Now the Republicans could still tear each other apart, but JBE could get some opposition from a black opponent, but that remains to be seen.

I thought Flemming was going to run against Cassidy? There better be another Republican to vote for if the GOP wants to retain that seat, because Cassidy is not going to get the vote.

Wonder if Letlow will run. There were rumors.

She, Miguez or Fleming would all be improvements over Cassidy.

Does she have any qualification/bona fides for a Senate run besides having been married to a Congressman-elect that passed away?

Rumor is she’ll run and Trump will back her.
Which would spin off another “what if” conversation of does Garrett Graves run for her old seat or vs Landry for Guv.

Major shenanigans in that second election... and he still barely won against a no-name Republican.

Like the GOP runoff candidate bringing in a bunch of high dollar grifters to manage his campaign, which did almost ZERO GOTV ground legwork.

He would have a better shot if he ran for Governor again.
