I remember so much controversy that came out when the game launched.

I never really saw anything controversial with it but I didn’t beat it at the time for reasons.

Anyway, I went back in to actually beat it this time and for the most part, I think it’s better in every way than the first one (which I also replayed last year).

I do like the dueling storylines. I do think Abbey’s storyline is fine.

I do have issues with quite how deranged they made Ellie. Especially when she leaves the farm. And then, I found her final fight with Abby to be way too fricking much. People still want to root for Ellie and I think they pushed to much back on people liking her in that last fight and her torturing people

Gameplay in 2 is better, but the story is undoubtedly shittier

Everyone hated how Joel was treated

Story is weak

Combat is better

But everyone in it is gay or gross, so righties hated it. . .therefore lefties had to love it and defend it because they hate the righties. . .and you know the rest

Same shite with the show

Technical masterpiece that is bloated by about 30% with far shittier writing. I get what they were going for with the narrative but it just didn't work.

Both games were fun to play. Think I enjoyed Dying Light more though.

The story is so depressing, but it is an incredible game.

Personally loved it, but it's not for everyone i guess.

a technical astounding game. The story was good in my opinion, and im ok with the direction they went.

Story in 1 is far superior though.

Seems to be the rational take from most. It was a rough playthrough because of the grittiness of the story but it was amazing when you're just blasting zombies/people.

Perfectly sums up how I feel about part 2. It was an unpleasant game to play which why I haven't completed the story again since it released.

I enjoyed it. Story was good, yeah what happened to Joe at the start sucked but obviously it worked because of all the publicity, and I enjoyed the bitterness of it, as I think it’s more real

This is getting embarrassing. How many editions of this game are they going to sell?

I understood what they were trying to accomplish story wise, but it’s done so ham fistedly that it doesn’t really work. Gameplay wise, it improved on everything that the original did and is a blast to play. I’ve beaten the game multiple times

I think the story in Part II was actually better. It took a simple revenge and loss storyline and flipped it on its head. Instead of just being Ellie going on her revenge tour where we learn revenge is bad. We also get to learn and see things from Abby's perspective. It's easy to hate Abby for her actions and while they're aren't justified what she did makes just as much sense as what Ellie did. Saying it's just revenge bad is widely ignorant and black and white. It's also about loss, forgiveness, change, PTSD, and perspective.

All that said the structure is certainly ballsy and I'm unsure if they'll use the same format for the show. It's also depressing as hell because there's not many happy moments after Joel dies.

I appreciated the story more than I liked it ..if that makes sense. It was just so gut wrenching. Top tier stealth action game though imo. Pacing during certain sections could've been improved.

Agree with most of the takes here: gameplay masterpiece with a story that I wanted to like, but that did not land.

I wish that they had bait and switched us at the very beginning of the game and had us play as Abby. Open on a total stranger and new group of friends, focus on making us like and relate to the WLF as a group of friends who care about each other, while gradually revealing more about their quest to Jackson and the motives behind it. Once you realize who Abby is, and why she’s going to Jackson, I feel like it would’ve given us that “oh shite” moment with a character we are starting to bond with.

Then, I’d have the game take on a more split narrative, with sections alternating between Abby and Ellie showcasing the respective repercussions of their actions on each other through Seattle Day 1, 2, 3.

Don’t know if it fixes anything, but give the players a better opportunity to bond with Abby before she kills Joel would have been a better way to have us sympathize with her, imo.

I've pitched an almost eerily similar execution plan on several forums and, while I'm sure it could be improved, it would be better than what we got. The key piece would be the reveal of what Abby's crew is doing and the ensuing dread. Even though I ended up liking Abby and enjoyed playing as her more than Ellie, the same cant be said of her dipshit friends who I enjoyed slaughtering. Would've been 10x the experience if I actually liked them before and had to kill them.

They really wanted to go for this "we're gonna make you hate Abby and then you're gonna like her!" deal and it was just way too hamfisted. And having you play ellie's story then rolling back time and playing Abby's story up to the same point was just an objectively bad choice

It’s probably the best technical piece the ps4 produced. Maybe tied with ghost of Tsushima. Other than that it’s total dog shite. At least they got someone skinny and cute for the show. They’re also talking about dragging out part 2 to 2-3 seasons lol.

The time for this was season 1 as it was already broken down well for it. Part two is actually a better story if you cut out like 50% of it and re edit the cut so some things are in different places like the Abby scene with the zebra in the first 5 minutes to try to make us care. A fan edit did it on YouTube it’s actually a lot lot better without 50% of the story
