The bill, co-sponsored by Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) — both members of the Senate Finance Committee — would “reaffirm” the role of Congress in setting and approving trade policy, according to a release from Cantwell’s office.

If passed, the Trade Review Act of 2025 would require the president to notify lawmakers of an imposition or increase in tariffs within 48 hours, explaining the reasoning and providing analysis of the impact on American businesses and consumers.

Congress would need to pass a joint resolution of approval for the new tariffs within 60 days or the additional taxes would expire, and it would also be able to end the tariffs at any time with a resolution of disapproval.

“Arbitrarily tariffs, particularly on our allies, damage U.S. export opportunities and raise prices for American consumers and businesses,” the Washington state Democrat added.

We all knew the UNI Party would come for blood.

Here is all I have to say. If they pass this, Dems will control the house, the senate, and the WH.

They better have a veto proof majority of votes if they want this enacted.

Long-term this is the right move and part of yhis administration's overall strategy to take power out of the exec branch and put it back in congress where it belongs.

I could see Trump signing this if it passed, although it would be used in a shitshow for the remainder of his presidency.

If you rely on Congress, nothing will get done.

America has been circling the debt drain for years and Congress just debates about, they do nothing, and they let disaster creep closer day by day.

The only one I would give a pass on is Rand Paul, who has always been anti-tariff and votes on principal (much like Massey), overall he is still a net positive. The rest of them are uniparty hacks.

What America really needs right now is a bunch of corrupt geriatrics who have never had a real job dictating trade policy.

I'll be impressed when Congress chooses to prioritize their actions and actually perform their primary job that they haven't done since 1996, which is to pass a balanced annual budget.

Maybe they should focus on that before trying to give themselves more raises and more responsibility/authority.

It's been almost three decades since they did their one job. Stew that in the old noggin for a moment. There are tenured, veteran, multi-term House and Senate members that have only ever passed omnibus bills and continuing resolutions full of pork that circumvents the Constitution as it is. Feckless ineptitude has become their status quo, and We the People continue to allow it.
