Why has the United States fallen so far in shipbuilding?

Until recently I just assumed it was due to low cost workers and substandard safety in South Korea, but then my eyes opened to many European nations also having successful ship building operations.

Can't cut down the Live Oaks anymore like the old days. It was great timber for ship building.

They are having trouble finding workers willing to work a physically demanding job for long hours with low pay.

Foreign ships passed our ships in the night

European’s almost entire lives are subsidized by the government.

Costs, mainly. The only reason the industry still exists at all is the Jones act.
Its expensive as hell to build a ship in America. Vastly more expensive than anywhere else in the world.

While this may be true, this isn’t the reason.

Yep, unions and labor laws.

In the marine industry and it’s because of cheaper labor and loose regulations if any.

I recommend the Maine Maritime Museum if you ever get the chance. It is at the location that many ships used to be built.

I think all of the new Disney cruise ships are being built in Germany which I would have assumed is more expensive than stateside.

The Royal British Navy in the 18th century would disagree with you.

Yes I’m referring to cargo vessels. Germany probably has some of the best technology to build cruise liners and yes Disney and the German shipbuilder Meyer have a long history together and ongoing contracts.
