There's a guy whose kid goes to the same school as mine. So, I often see him in his truck in the end-of-day pickup line. It's a lifted, modified Ford 3/4-ton, probably an F-350.

The thing about this truck that I find most noticeable is that it basically always seems to make a whistling turbo sound. I'm not sure it does it at idle, but if this guy gets on the throttle even a tiny bit, I hear what sounds like a turbo spooling up.

My questions are, is this really what I am hearing, and, if so, how is it achieved, and is it a good idea? My car is turbocharged, and I watch the boost meter and don't even get into positive boost until the car is full warmed up and above 2,500RPM or so. I've never gotten anywhere near positive boost pressure in the school carpool lane. Every second you're spinning up that turbo is just one more chance to grind everything down, IMO.

Just seems weird to me... but if he's going for a "big rig" sound I think he's definitely gone above and beyond with that.

Probably a 6.0 power stroke if I had to guess. They sound so good

Totally normal. Although some people intentionally get louder turbos.

On my Cummins 1 Ton, there was a 'silencer ring' located in the inlet port of the turbo... removing the ring dramatically increased the high pitched turbo spooling noise.....

At first I was very disappointed, I heard no difference at all....... then realized the sound was above 1500hz....so most everyone but me heard it quite well.

So even at very low load, the turbo is cramming air into the intake manifold?

Seems wasteful, but I guess if you're towing something really heavy, you might want the turbo spooled up constantly so you get good throttle tip-in performance.

My 2011 f250 was doing that for a while...

Then it blew up.

Kinda. Its still pumping a hair even at no load

The geometry of the turbine and the compressor and the speed are what drive the noise.

The turbo will spin from the exhuast and not build boost at a low rpm

My little VW TDI has turbo whistle at idle.

Might be a deleted diesel power stroke but I’m not mechanic.

My buddy in high school worked on his dads farm and drove a F250 that sounded like a jet airplane when he accelerated

if it's a 3/4 ton it's a 250. a 350 is a one ton. come on, baw.

Diesels are absolute dogs without the turbo. They'd accelerate at the pace of a cargo train without the turbo. The way they get them accelerate decently is to kick that turbo on early in acceleration. Earlier than a gasser for sure.

Every diesel truck has come with a turbo for probably the last 40 years, his is probably a straight piped 6.0, those make a ton of turbo noises with no mufflers to quiet it down. Your gas car might only produce a few pounds of boost but diesels are super high compression and built for it, I'll regularly see ~25lb of boost on my truck and it sits around ~14lb just going down the highway. They're built for it.

i put straight pipes and a 6637 filter kit on my 7.3 and it has a pretty noticeable whistle with even a little throttle, everything else is stock.

6.0s sound WAY better though.

So, why did you put “So” at the beginning of this sentence?

It probably has an open air filter system on it and the truck is more than likely deleted. Does he roll a lot of coal when he hammers on it?

Its definitely deleted and most likely a 4" or 5" straight pipe. If you hear it that much, he most likely has an aftermarket turbo, likely bigger and with more vanes. Most of the time more vanes equal more whistle.

this and it ain't because of how he's stepping on the diesel pedal. Its just the sound the motor makes now. i know.
