Is China’s AI bubble about to burst?

quote:

What happened to China’s AI boom, which just a matter of months ago was in full tilt and bursting at the seams? Last year saw millions of high-end Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) GPUs find their way across the country, wearily navigating tariffs and U.S. export restrictions. But they braved this climate heroically.

quote:

China's rapid expansion of AI infrastructure was monolithic, but it didn’t come without severe challenges, most of which have been chalked up to poor planning and a misalignment between built capacities and actual demand. On top of that, it was a rush job, and many AI data centers were constructed without a clear understanding of the specific requirements for training versus inference workloads, leading to inefficiencies, according to Alibaba’s CEO, who sees a big bubble here, as reported by Barron’s.

quote:

The growing pain China’s AI industry is going through is largely a result of inexperienced players—corporations and local governments—jumping on the hype train, building facilities that aren’t optimal for today’s need,” Jimmy Goodrich, RAND Corporation senior advisor for technology, told MIT Technology Review.

Just like DeepSeek, which was just copied from stolen ChatGPT code and stolen data for training. Everyone in China is stealing or brute forcing their way to trying to catch up, and it’s not gonna work in the long run

Imagine a country that built its “tech industry” on stolen tech…..then expecting them to excel on leading edge AI……

To be fair very few players in America know how to build a successful AI business too. Most of them are just wrappers on ChatGPT.

Acquiring GPUs is a fraction of the battle. Making them work in harmony is the real business.

I have not followed the DeepSeek story since it was big news and everyone was saying "American companies doomed, China is the future of AI." Has that story fallen apart?

In the long term, the threat is real simply because the CCP decided a few decades ago that the reason that America and West were so far ahead was because of science and engineers. The result is that CCP members now have a lot of scientists and engineers.

Of course, the dems have AOC to solve problems here.

The majority of AI influencers don't know anything.

All those idiots who promoted deepseeks claims outed themselves as ML illiterate.

We don’t have a smoking gun, but credible experts in the field have generally weighed in that it’s likely DeepSeek ripped off ChatGPT, and it’s nearly guaranteed that the training data was all stolen - or at least no one was paid for use of the data. It’s likely the Chinese government would waive any issues of data usage in training the model if it was Chinese data, which isn’t the case in the US. That’s a large part of why the model cost so much less, but also they have likely lied about the costs of the model outside of the cost of the training data
