Boston Red Sox designated hitter Rafael Devers became the first major league player to strike out 10 times in the first three games of a season.
Devers went 0-for-4 with three more strikeouts Saturday night in Boston's 4-3 loss to the Texas Rangers, including his last at-bat in the ninth inning when he swung and missed at a 92.3 mph cutter from former teammate Chris Martin. Devers is 0-for-12 this season, though he drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning Saturday
The 10 strikeouts broke the previous record of nine in the first three games, which was done five times previously since 1901, according to SportRadar.
0-12 with 10 K’s is crazy work

He needs to go ahead and tell us it’s Bregman’s fault.

Devers moved to DH after Boston's offseason acquisition of Alex Bregman, a move the team's longtime third baseman did not initially welcome. However, after Friday's loss to the Rangers, Devers shrugged off the notion that the move might have something to do with his slow start.
"No, I think that's in the past," Devers said, according to MLB.com. "That was in spring training. Right now, we're in the season. I'm a DH and I feel like you guys need to change the subject because that is over and I'm the DH."

You buying that? I guess he’s at least willing to say what they tell him to say.

Not good when his bat was the only reason he had a roster spot. He gets traded by the deadline.

He will request a trade soon

you hate to see it
dude was bitching about Bregman instead of worrying about himself.

Good thing the Red Sox decided to build around Devers and not Mookie or Xander. Really looking like the right decision.

Devers is owed c. 300 million. No one is trading for him even if he gets back on track.
And that's quite the price to pay for a DH.

He’s in terrible shape

Yup, it’s gotten worse each year. He’d be a lot better at 3B just from dropping 20-25 pounds but he clearly doesn’t want to
For the people saying he will be traded, he has like 9 years and 270 million left on his deal

He will be fine this year, but it's kind of insane you have to worry about lack of conditioning on someone with that massive of a guaranteed contract.

That’s why.

It's baseball, all contracts are guaranteed.

Doesn’t change the fact that if your money is guaranteed, the motivation to get better or even remain at the same level can be greatly reduced or lost depending on the person.
