The death of Rec league is a travesty to kids socially and athletically, and is a result of pendulum swinging back too far from the participation trophy generation.

The real participation trophy winners in travel ball are the dads

My Braxton is set to pick up his 17th World Series ring at 9.

Sorry your kid couldn’t cut it.

It's really hurt.

I've coached rec for at least 9 years now.

2 teams a year. I've actually put up all jerseys and will one day do something with them. It's been a great way to spend time with my kids as well as others.

Since T ball it's gone way down. Went from 8 tball teams to 2.

We are lucky if we can field two teams at each level and end up playing each other a lot.

I don't mind coaching still after my boys are done but I'm not sure they'll be anything left.

The only hope for rec would be baseball gets so fricking expensive people have to come back. I sure don't want that for anyone.

Really? My Thaxton struck him out 4 times in the final game and went 3 for 4 at the plate.

No one is stopping Rec Ball. Where is the outrage for tryouts and competition in basketball, cheer, dance, music? And Travel Ball is such a misnomer. Most kids these days play Tournament Ball, and most tournaments have multiple divisions based upon skill level, so there's a place for any kid that wants to play.

Meh. Most kids don’t play travel ball, they play tournament ball. There are plenty of AA teams everywhere to accommodate the later bloomer kids. I do agree that the teams and parents traveling the country at 13 and younger are nuts, but that’s about 10% of teams, maybe less.

Bottom line is that it can be as low key or as out of control as you make it.

Not surprising. Thaxton is a stud, and Braxton is dead weight that probably won’t make the cut next year for the “Bomb Squad”.

Rec league in my hometown was a blast. Town could usually support 8 to 10 teams in each age group. My buddy’s dad’s company sponsored the team from t-ball through 15.

When we were 8 our parents let us all start biking in to the game and we’d stop by one of our buddy’s dad’s gas stations on the way in to town for Gatorade, Yoo-hoo and big league chew.

Good times until it got to the level where you had to have some talent and I was forced to retire.

WTF is the board's obsession with travel baseball?

If y'all haven't noticed, it's in every sport. Maybe football it's not.

They have travel baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer is out of fricking control, Lacrosse...

I can't hear you over the thunderous crack of Breydeyn's batting practice.

let me be very clear, i couldn't possibly care less about rec or travel baseball

but one could ague that local rec league baseball was a huge part of american culture in a way that basketball/cheer/dance/etc. never were and it's sad to see it fade into the abyss.

i don't think it's crazy to argue that the trend of kids "specializing" in certain sports and activities at younger ages isn't a great thing.

Daxton is a left handed pitcher. I’ve got him throwing tons of curves in spite of tendinitis. He will have his fourth Tommy John surgery next week. We don’t rehab bc we know those orthos are just trying to hold him down.

Most of the nostalgia that people miss from the 70s just doesn't happen anymore. Kids don't gather to play Kick the Can, Capture the Flag, etc. Kids no longer ride their bikes with their glove on handlebar. But boys of all ages and abilities still play baseball. I only had Little League as an option, but would easily have preferred the Tournament Ball format simply because you play more baseball.
