Back in 2015, shortly after graduating, I was desperate for a job. That's pretty sad considering that I graduated in electrical engineering, but so it goes. In my desperation, I started asking around for available positions on TD. Eventually, a handsome yet treacherous poster gave me a heads up that a firm that he worked for was hiring. I ended up being hired by his employer, and I'm still there currently (and generally happy working there). I'm telling my story because I'm hoping that my nephew can have some similar luck.

My nephew graduated somewhat recently from Nicholls with a degree in finance. He's been going through what I did when I graduated, and really struggling to find work related to his field. He's getting desperate, and is looking for damn near any decent paying job that he can get.

I'm not worried about him finding a job in general, as many employers are desperate for competent workers. But I would be disappointed if he spent the time and effort in getting a bachelors in finance, but never gets a job related to it. He was pretty excited about his studies/major, so he'd be much more upset about the situation than I would.

He has been on a decent amount of interviews over the past few months. He was recently offered a low paying job in his finance field , but it would be a 1.5 hour drive to and from work. It doesn't pay enough for him to be able to move out of his dad's place to get closer to his office. I don't know all of the details, but I got a feeling that the offer was in the $15-20 range, so similar to the higher fast food wages.

So I have a few questions/desperate requests:
-considering his current job offer: given the 180 minutes spent travelling to/from work each day, would it be worth him taking a finance job despite the shitty pay? I would be pretty miserable spending 3 hours a day traveling for shitty pay, but it may be worth it to get the experience in his field. Realistically, how long would he need to work there before his experience can help him get a job that is either better paying (so that he can afford to move) or get a similar job in the finance capital that is Thibodaux? If anyone of you think that it makes a difference, I will get him to tell me more about the job offer/employer and update.
-my nephew still lives close to Nicholls in Thibodaux, and would prefer to stay nearby. After a lot of digging, I've found a few bank jobs that are within a 1hr drive, but not much else. If any of you have some thoughts/suggestions in the Thibodaux area, they would be appreciated.
-my nephew IS willling to move to get a finance-related job. I'd like to be able to see him occasionally, so I'd love some pointers to get him employed in LA or southern MS/AL. But we will take whatever we can get. If you know of a specific job (or if you're hiring) for someone in the finance field, I may be willing to kiss you on the mouth if you provide a legit reference or directly hire him. He is good people. He's pretty smart, a legit hard worker, and occasionally witty. Most importantly, he's willing to learn from/eat shite when he makes mistakes.

Better get some certifications, etc. I graduated in Finance many moons ago….

Took an internship with a consumer finance company, and got sucked into that for 17 years. Great money… until it wasn’t… thanks COVID.

So now degree useless bc no experience , unless I wanted to go back to $50k/year….

Get in with a solid company, and work your way up

How can he not live on his own making 20/hr? A studio in Louisiana can be what 600-700? Yeah he will have to budget but didn’t we all have to when we graduated and got our first jobs?

Bro. What year did you last apartment shop in? Like 2012?

$700 would be straight hood. Like bullets and pit bulls.

I don't want to turn this thread towards this "how affordable is this area in LA" topic (which it is heading towards), but he's living rent-free with his father in Thibodaux right now. He'd like to break free of that situation, but continuing to live with his father (working locally) definitely makes things more comfortable for him over the next few years. He is open to either option depending on job opportunities.

I'm open to any useful advice that I can pass on to him. But me telling him to move out of his dad's place (where he can start racking up savings while living rent free) while he's making $20/hr is, in my opinion, neither realistic nor a good decision.

You and Lucille are on opposite ends of the spectrum. But neither of you are close to the current costs of rentals/bananas.

Unless it's in the middle of nowhere, a $600-700 studio in LA is going to be in a horrible neighborhood.

I don't want to turn this thread into a fight to raise wages for randos or limpdicks. I just want the best for my nephew. He's had a tough life, with his mother (my sister) passing away when he was really young. He is in that perfect range of eager + willing + competent + available. TD, help us out.

I’d look for oilfield service companies in that area looking for help in the office. The smaller the better.

Why are you not understanding this is a huge part of the problem? Young people need to expect to move around early on. A huge impact on being promoted is often someone willing to move to a new location.

Bank managers for example are often moved around a lot early on especially for larger banks.

Maybe maybe not. Everyone assumes pricing in Louisiana is based off Nola and BR and that’s simply far from untrue.

Living on your own is dumb though, you have all utilities on your own. It would be closer to $1000 after utilities most likely. He needs to find a job then crash on a friends couch or find a roommate. A 2 bedroom for $1500 total with $1800 total after utilities is likely very possible especially just for a year until he gets his feet set.

As someone who was born and raised in Thibodaux he is going to have to get out of Thibodaux most likely.

Not to say he can’t go back. I haven’t, yet. But to get established in a career it’s his best option.

I mean I don’t know how you could expect to graduate from Nicholls in Finance and stay close to home making good money. His university is going to prevent him from getting a good initial job outside of the area. And, B.S. Finance degrees from Southland schools are barely worth the paper they’re printed on.

Now, he needs to get to New Orleans or Baton Rouge and try and get a job at the biggest company he can. JPMC, Entergy, Oschner, Whitney, etc. If you gotta move in with another guy and split it, so be it. But, these jobs typically get a ton of interest, so networking, even for an entry level position, is crucial. Chances are, you’re not going to get a 70k job in Thibodeaux, out of college, with a finance degree. Also look at buyer and cost analysis job at the BR plants.

IIRC you refused to leave the greater NOLA area for a job. So your hardships were entirely driven by your stubbornness to relocate.

My suggestion to your nephew is the same I suggested to you, be willing to leave and he will have a job in 60 days.

What does this have to do with anything? Comparing your base starting rate to another industry makes no sense unless you’re only after money regardless of industry. Does he want to work in finance? Then go get a job in finance and move your way up.

The number on the starting pay for an out of college graduate from a non prestigious school without past experience essentially means nothing. Go get a job and experience and then work your way into the industry.

Sacrifice, effort, and experience are what build success.
