What is this board’s view of Planet Fitness?

Went for the first time today. It was fine. Clean. Had everything I need. I saw one machine that was out of service in the whole place. Locker room setup is kind of lame, but overall not a bad experience.
My PF is somewhat ethnic. If you like Latinas, this is the place.

Planet Fitness has done a great job in changing their brand. They are slowly added squat racks, leg press, heavier dumbbells, getting rid of the lunk alarm, etc.
Makes you wonder if Sam Sulek working out there and posting videos got them to look at changing.

I haven’t been to one since the summer, and I understand they’re shifting their model and upgrading machines. Even before that they were very useful to get a lift in when on travel. I much prefer my home gym, but you can get a a good workout in at PF.

Seriously no more lunk alarm? I enjoyed the YouTube videos of people trying to get kicked out

Heavier dumbbells? How heavy exactly?
I’ve thought about getting a PF membership for when I travel for work

I joined PF recently too because there's one 2 mins from my house and it's cheap. I actually like it a lot. It's clean, wide variety of people working out from gym bros to grannies, it's never too crowded (may vary), and you can workout at any location when you're traveling. My PF is also open 24/7 which is huge for me because late at night is usually when I get the time to go. They market to beginners, but who cares?
The spa zone alone is great if you're into that stuff

Really my only complaint besides the location I went too had way too many people and not enough equipment was the lack of a legit bench and not a smith machine. Glad to hear they're changing that.

The one by my house here on the MS coast is a “higher end” PF, for what that’s worth. Plenty of different machines, Smith machines, and what most PFs have in common…tons of cardio.
They are otherwise hit or miss when I travel. Montgomery has an ok one, Columbus, GA has an ok one, etc., but at least I can usually find one.
I will say the hydro massage chairs and red light therapy machines are pretty nice perks where available.
And pretty dang cheap. Not for a powerlifter mind you, but most people can get by with the local PF.

The one I went to had up to 75lb. May vary by location I suppose.

The Wal-Mart of gyms. Slowing squeezing out better independent options with their sheer size. Don't they only have Smith press and no benches? Smith press sucks.

By “most people” you mean 99% of the population? PF is just fine and it appears all locations are being upgraded with new equipment.

I'm not sure. But if I had to travel for work, I'd have a membership.

Club4 is another similar option that has more free weights and hammer strength machines. I like the one in Lafayette allot, but if you go any other time than early morning, it’s a shite show.

Yea I go to the Club4 in Houma. I’m usually there between 5:30-6 am. It’s not terrible. I’ll usually just do some cardio to let it thin out more.
If I go in the evenings, I’ll wait until at least 7:30. It’s crazy after 5pm.

Yeah I’ll go midday on my days off sometimes and I quickly remember why I go at 0430-5am
We’re getting a new one in Lafayette so I’m hoping it takes a load off of the one south of town.

Here's there explicit business plan: sell ultra-cheap memberships to middle-aged (mostly female) fatties who can then claim they have a gym membership but hardly ever actually go.

I started back at a PF. Clean, ok equipment, although I hate smith machines. 75lb max weight DBs was fine at the time. $10 a month was worth for the cardio alone

I’ve been kicked out twice. Once for deadlifting and another time for wearing a tank top exposing a nipple. frick that place.
