Considering a 12-14 day trip with the family this summer. Fly into Seattle and drive the Oregon coast then to Crater Lake. Just starting to look at this and would appreciate any input. We were originally planning to go to Maine, but now looking at other options.

Thanks,

All of that is good, but I don't know about Crater Lake as some kind of ultimate destination.

Olympic National Park is beautiful. Make sure you check it out while you’re in Washington.

We went a couple years ago. Flew into Seattle for 5 days, got a rental and drove to Vancouver for 5 days and flew back from Vancouver. Great trip. Our first time in the PNW and definitely want to go back.

Chihuli Glass Garden in Seattle is really cool. Last time we were there we went on a whole watching boat just outside of Seattle and it was super cool.

If you drive south into Oregon, don’t take the interstate. Take the winding roads and it will be much more interesting. It’s really pretty up there.

We had an amazing house on Lake Cushman this past summer. I had no idea it was that beautiful out there. We had sun the whole 8 days too.

I'd like to fly in to Seattle and rent one of those sprinter campers for a week and just drive up the coast to all the outdoosry/camping hotspots with the wife and kids.

Anyone ever done that?

I would finish in San Fransisco and fly home from there. More for the Red Woods than the city itself.

Some amazing places in that stretch of northern California. Jedediah Redwoods state park, Redwoods National Park.

It's a long arse drive, but beautiful coastline and outdoors.

I basically did that a few years back (minus Crater lake). Started down from Seattle area and then hit Hoh national forest, went over to the coast and hit Rialto and Ruby beach, then traveled down the coast and hit Astoria and Cannon beach/haystack rock down in Oregon. Continued down the Oregon coast and then bounced over to Tillamook and the factory there.

Then cut over through Portland and visited Multnomah Falls and the gorge. Traveled south through Oregon and did a bunch of wine tasting along the way, particularly in Roseburg. From there traveled down the California coast and visited the Redwoods before spending a day in San Francisco and traveling back home to AZ.

I highly recommend it, it was an awesome trip. You could pretty easily do a similar trip and cut over from Multnomah Falls down to Crater Lake instead of middle Oregon and California like we did. Though if you are spending 14 days you could probably do the California coast/Redwoods too and fly out of San Fran.

I really enjoy going there with a water toy. Lots of good memories.

Have family in Eugene. Been to Oregon a number of times. Washington once. We're actually going to Washington in late May and staying at the Lake Quinault Lodge.

That's a great amount of time for a trip! Almost think "you can't do it all" in these beautiful states. SO much to see and do. SO many options.

Some basic thoughts...

If you're flying into Seattle, go spend maybe 3-5 days in The Olympic National Park. So much to see and do. Lake Quinault is in the Park, but we stayed years ago at Lake Crescent Lodge.

Oregon. Wow. You could spend a lot of your time on the coast alone.

Go to the Bend area and stay at Sun River Resort! This place has it all. Biking. Golf. Hiking trails. Tubing and Kayaking in season. Indoor pool. Rental homes are in the area and you can check them out on sites like VRBO or AirBNB. We rented a small house in the resort and it was perfect for the week.

Beautiful part of the state. Bend is amazing with all it's shops, restaurants, bars. Numerous hiking trails in the area. Tubing and kayaking in season. About 1 1/2 hours from Crater Lake, a MUST SEE!

Yachats would be a great coastal town to base in. Lots of bars, restaurants, hiking, tidal pools in the area.

If you have time to check out the Museum of Flight, it’s well worth the trip. The collection is really fantastic.

Sounds like a great trip. I've done a lot of driving around out there. Perhaps fly into Seattle and rent a car for week one. Spend a few nights in Port Townswend and expore the Olympic Peninsula. Have lunch at Salty Girls, explore Lake Crescent and downtown Port Angeles. Take the ferry to Whidbey Island and drive up to Deception Pass, maybe have a beer in Anacortes. Don't sleep on the ferry system. Most rides are 20-30 minutes and $15/person plus the car. The scenery from the ferry is spectacular.

If you really want an amazing ferry ride, drive thirty minutes over the border in Canada and take the Swartz Bay ferry, it's a 90 minute ride around the islands.

If you spend week two in the Portland area, spend a day at Cannon Beach, maybe another day at McMenamins in Troutdale enjoying some beer. Downtown Portland used to be fun but I haven't been in a while, it sounds awful now. The drive east along the Columbia is spectacular, you can hike the falls at Wahkeena, Multnomah, and Horsetail.

I’m assuming you’re talking about the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. Yes, great place. That’s where the Spruce Goose is. There are four buildings: the aviation museum, the space, Museum, an IMAX theater, and a waterpark with a 747 on the roof that you can slide from into the building and into the pool. It’s a must see. Plus, you’re in the middle of wine country, Willamette Valley, although with the family you may not be doing a lot of tasting.

Been up in the Pacific Northwest with my family about half a dozen times. And I can wholeheartedly say that if you are doing Seattle and Portland, you absolutely need to do Mt. Rainier, which is more or less between the two. Stay at the Paradise Lodge in the National Park.

You can also throw in Mt. St. Helen's, between Portland and Mt. Rainier.

All the rest of the things listed: Olympic National Park, Victoria BC, Vancouver BC, Astoria, Mt. Hood ( you can stay at the lodge that was used for exterior shots of the Overlook in The Shining), the San Juan Islands, etc. are all great as well. Catch a Mariners game while there --It's a great baseball stadium.

Best time to visit is later summer, especially for the mountains like Rainier. Takes awhile for the snow to melt at the alpine meadow levels and the flowers don' t usually bloom until well into July.

Thanks guys! This has definitely peaked our interest and flights seem reasonable. any recs for specific areas to stay ? Thinking some of the islands would be cool for 2-4 days. will have two kids (11&14) and possibly grand parents. ideally stay in a nice vrbo. What about fishing or crabbing charter in the area? have a son that loves to fish.
